NYG passed on some QBs at the top of the draft LY...they went with Eli again and found themselves in another top 10 draft position again a year later...they were not going to pass on QB this time...Jones was their guy.

Probably too high, but most QBs get taken too high...the key is he checked off the boxes the Giants were looking for...now to build the team around him.

Time will tell.

Bottom line is he couldn't have done any better and if he'd had a performance similar to Haskin's debut(2 INT's) for the Redskins he would have needed to be smuggled out of NY with a disguise.

Meh not after one drive in a preseason game, the fact is he made 5 throws. All but one were short routes, nobody is doubting his short accuracy that's where he accels. Played great but still just a glimpse.

I think all of us knew both of these QB's will likely need developing. Haskins will need time, he made some mistakes but he also made some extremely impressive throws downfield in small pockets.

Still gotta see more. Jones' short accuracy is impressive nonetheless.

Agreed, and I don't think anyone here is saying he is a guaranteed HOF QB or even the future of the franchise. Just that when he was asked to do his job he did it well, we all know he has room to grow and mistakes to make.

Well all I know is I was hoping the Pats would have taken him. Three year starter, attended smart kid school, quality arm. But we did not so I move on..
to be fair, I'm pretty sure his critics would rip him if he went 1-7 with 2 INTs...even though same people will dismiss the 5-5.

The biggest problem Jones is going to have is dealing with the NY media and fans because they expect instant results from any new guy on a NY roster. They even came down hard on my favorite baseball player of all times, Mickey Mantle, when he first arrived in the big apple. At least this is one thing Zion won't have to put up with.

I still cant shake the feeling he becomes the surprise of the 1st round. Not because I know anything about him. But because the narrative is set for it to be. A team ridiculed for reaching to early for him. Then once he takes over for Eli (which will happen) he plays well above expectations.
Don't think it will be like a Mahomes type elevation of play. But a surprising level nonetheless.

I just see this becoming the story next year.

Daniel Jones perfect in storm-shortened Giants debut

Daniel Jones' preseason debut was short but oh so sweet.

The New York Giants rookie signal-caller took over for Eli Manning in the first quarter of Big Blue's opener against the New York Jets. Manning got just one drive. Jones needed only one.

Jones, the much-ridiculed No. 6 overall selection, led New York on an eight-play scoring march on his lone drive of the evening. The rookie completed all five of his attempts to Cody Latimer, Golden Tateand Bennie Fowler for 67 yards. Jones was sharp on his designed throws and patient with his reads. His drive-clinching back-corner touchdown pass to Fowler was a thing of beauty.

The first-year thrower was set to come on for another drive, but the contest was suspended for nearly an hour due to severe weather. When Big Blue returned to the field, Jones was on the sideline and third-string QB Alex Tanney was under center.

They play week 10. The Jets aren't going to show their hand.

One series. One game. A preseason game, at that.

So... tempered enthusiasm. A good start, though.

Jones reminds me of a somewhat more athletic Nick Foles. Which isn't too shabby.

I'm not surprised. I thought he was the best QB prospect in the draft.

Is this thing actually blowing up based on one drive in a preseason game? Matt Barkley went 9/14 with a 9.0 YPA and a TD last night against an a really good Colts team, who's he starting for this year?

In fairness: the way you and many, many others savaged this pick... it's a wonder that Daniel Jones can do anything more than walk on a field under his own power and drool on a football.

The mere fact of Jones flashing potential in his first preseason action makes all that earlier commentary seem more than a little over the top.

He reminds me of QB that played for the Colts(LSU) named Bert Jones, foot movement, pocket presence, size, gets the ball out quick, etc

It actually means nothing at this point. One series in one preseason games means literally nothing, as I illustrated with the Barkley statline. I honestly had no idea he was even in the league anymore, as his 59% comp% and 10:18 career TD/INT ratio would suggest.
