the top candidates in my mind are cruz or moreland(plus prospects) if we get prince....probably for some arms

I'd think Olt would be the big trade piece if we get Prince. That pretty much locks up our corners for the next 5 or so years and Olt is in demand supposedly right now.

Here are my scenarios:

A) Announce Darvish and that is it
B) Announce Darvish and the signing of Pena, trade Harrison, Mitch, 2nd tier prospect like Lamb or Matthews to Cubs for Garza

and my way out in left field idea:

C) Announce Darvish and Fielder, announce trade of Olt and Harrison to TPA for Hellickson

the safe play is A. and with either B or C i don't see them going for another arm. maybe for a CF'er but not an arm

I agree, but rumors are that we are looking at Oswalt. That could be an "in case Yu doesn't sign" but I doubt it. I think they really want to ditch Harrison for some reason and put Ogando back in the pen.

If they sign fielder you have to think Olt is trade bait as he will be blocked at both corners long term by Fielder and Beltre, unless they move him to a corner OF position. I think they have worked him some on that.

In either case I think you are right. Cruz or Moreland will likely be traded. I don't think Borbon is safe from trade bait either. I'm sure Profar, Perez, Ramirez are untouchable.

Pena is not an upgrade over Moreland. I'll be pissed if they make that move.

cant recall were i heard this but in reference to olt the plan i heard is keep him let him play 1/2 more years in minors and then he plays the mike young kind of role dh/1b/3b sub and can take over full time if beltre/fielder breaks down

Man, I hate the idea of mothballing a guy for a year or two only to make him a UI when he could headline a trade today.

Headline of a trade > UI in two years.

looking at the Rangers, the only weak link, other than youth in the starting rotation, is Centerfield. we do not want Hamilton anywhere near there

i agree it makes more sense to use Olt now to bring in a usable player or players now than waste him as a UI a couple of years down the road

Defense would be equal, but Pena is the better hitter. Granted he K's roughly 50% more, but he takes 300% more walks as well as more HR's and RBI's.


Pena for two years upgrades your offense, holds par on 1B defense, gives you a chance to keep Josh, and lets you keep Olt and bring him up at 1B in a year or two.

Oh ok that makes sense. I'm only talking moving Olt if Prince comes here, and that is because Prince will take at least a 5 year deal to sign here.

True, but Beltre will still have a few years left. Young will be gone and we will need a DH, unless Josh is in that role.

sorry you do have that right but i think that if the Rangers can't get Prince they will stay with Moreland, Young & Napoli at 1st before they bring in Pena.

Probably, but I have no idea what will happen. If Texas is determined to move Mitch and keep Josh, then Pena is the guy that makes a lot of sense.

I wouldnt say that Fielder has 1B on "lockdown" for the extent of his contract. Defensively, he's about average....if not below. Yes, he is athletic...but his defense is not what is earning him his large contract.

IMO, I could see Fielder moving to DH to make way for Olt at 1B in a couple of years... especially if his glove starts to elude him.

Of course, that requires them to actually sign Fielder first. haha.
