Looks like it is coming down to a sign and trade with Gasol going to Bulls for just picks.

Now the deal fell through and Gasol walks and we get nothing. Lakers wanted 2 first rounders, Bulls said no and offered one which would have ventureed close to the second round so it wasn't worth it.

hmm maybe I'm not understanding

Lakers refused to do a S&T because the Bulls offered just 1 first rounder which as you said would be towards the back of the first round

Would Lakers have to take back a player as well?

What I don't understand from the Lakers perspective is their unwillingness to do the S&T. It doesn't harm them in any way from my understanding and any draft picks - even late first round - is desirable.

Even if the FO doesn't think it is worth it now they don't have Gasol and received nothing for him. At least stockpile the draft pick and who knows they might be able to package a couple of draft picks to move up.

Maybe I'm missing something but it seems like a bad play by the Lakers FO to me :noidea:

Exum is a beast!!! Thanks Utah. You already had a point guard and did not need one, and drafted one any way. Boy would Exum have been exciting here. Dumtoni the gift that keeps on giving.

I just can't see Carmelo signing with a team that has NO SHOT of even competing for a deep playoff run--let alone even making the playoffs--in the next two years in a highly competitive Western Conference. I suspect he will either resign with the Knicks or take an offer from the Bulls.

Agreed. Something is better than nothing. We had 0 bargaining power here. Pau did not have to do a sign and trade and the fact that it was offered was a courtesy to us. So, then we go and overplay our hand and get nothing. We could have gone into next year with 2 first round picks. We could have used those picks to do a sign and trade, or to move up in the draft, etc... But instead we just take nothing for Pau.

The Celtics and Lakers are the two most storied franchises in the NBA....Both are bad right now...But I can almost guarantee that the Celtics will be relevant again before the Lakers will...

Not a big deal. The Lakers wanted 2 picks, the Bulls only wanted to part with one. The Lakers would likely have had to take back a player (probably Boozer) that they can still get if and when he gets amnestied.

The only one who lost anything was Pau who had to sign for less money than if they did the S&T.

Gasol is walking to Bulls because Mitch got greedy in a sign & trade.

Last I heard it was Dunleavy and a 1st. Mitch should have jumped on that for the 1st since Gasol is older. Dunleavy isn't anything special, but the Lakers need bodies & Dunleavy is decent.

Shame they couldn't get a first round pick out of it. I guess they didn't want to commit $3.3mil to Dunleavy this season. It's an expiring contract though. Wouldn't have hurt flexibility for next season.

Turns out, one of our picks is impressing teh summer league while others in the first round are bombing. I read an article indicating that Clarkson was very impressive in running our offense. He was the second rounder we purchased. He was even better than Marshall when we lost to the Raptors.

According to the article, Exum and Vonleh stunk it up. Vonleh went 0-13 and Exum looked out of sorts and lost while Clarkson finished the game with 21 points and a number of assists. Clarkson may just vault ahead of Marshall if current play continues. It was a great article on the summer league. Its over on SB Nation.
