Going out and scouting is not overstated TJF12. You'll routinely find Pat Riley (at his age), Lawrence Franks, and Paul Rivers to name a few at many college basketball games scouting players all over the country. Certainly Magic can choose to be just a the face of the franchise and let others bring him players but many of his colleagues are doing the work firsthand and that may be the edge that Magic will not necessarily have.
Riley doesn't go out as much anymore, but none of those guys do all of the scouting. That firsthand is actually more 2nd or 3rd hand. The scout team does most of the leg work.
Normally, when they show up, it's for games involving top draft picks playing each other (Magic was at UCLA/Washington checking out Ball and Fultz, as were several others) or when they are trying to make a final decision on guys the scout team has already seen and told them about.
