Larry Brooks ‏@NYP_Brooksie 56s Source tells Post that NHL will not attempt to prevent Kovalchuk from playing in KHL. NHL return would have to be approved by every team.

never going to happen.

First off:
The contract was designed in a way that any lockout changes can be considered, which is why the recapture is that low. I think it could be even lower than $250,000 per year because last year's salaries were cut significantly. Kovy's first two years which occurred during the last CBA was actually lower than his salary cap hit. It only started to increase a lot last year.

2nd:
I'm upset as a Devils fan but very concerned as an NHL fan. I don't see how Russians can remain in the NHL because this opens up a massive hole in the system. Teams wont want to draft Russians anymore because of the huge risk and teams also wont sign Russians to long contracts anymore since there wont be any guarantee that they finish the contract. If these 2 things do happen, it would make playing in the KHL more reliable than playing in the NHL.

3rd:
It may just be wishful thinking since I'm a fan of the Devils but I think the NHL should set a precedence to prevent this from happening. Giving teams that lose players this way benefits such as draft picks or cap credits would soften the risk in signing Russians to longer term contracts.

Kinda hope he finds himself in trouble with some Russian match fixers/gangsters and winds up in debt to the mob or something else terrible. Maybe not, but also, yeah.

Its wasnt fucking cap circumvention. It was the same fucking thing every other fucking team before them has fucking done

Your team signed him. Your team has to deal with the it. This is something that could happen to any team with Russian players. Burmistrov just bailed on the Jets. Every team that drafts or signs a Russian player better think long & hard about it first.

I'm fine with that. Thats why my hate is for Kovy (and the owner) and not Lou and the rest of the team. But to call is cap circumvention is bullshit. What Wang did with Thomas last year? THATS circumvention.

I completely understand why every Devils fan would be angry. You have every reason to be. As for what Wang did last year with Thomas, I didn't like it, but it wasn't against the rules. The Isles had the cap space & utilized it.

Kovy's original contract wasnt against the rules either, until they decided they didnt want to do those type of contracts any long so lets just not approve that one

So Bergfors, Oduya, Cormier, 2010 first round pick, 2014 first round pick, $3 million, a 3rd round pick, the loss of Parise, any other casualties to this debacle of a chapter in Devils history?
