He cant play in the KHL because NHL and KHL have an agreement not to take each other players so unless he is totally a FA he cant.

listening to team1040 radio and sounds like the above is wrong

he retires
if the Devils are in agreement with the retirement they can VOID the contract
and he is free to sign in the KHL or other league ... CANNOT SIGN WITH ANOTHER NHL TEAM THOUGH

so this isnt gonna be the blueprint for Luongo

So if he files official retirement paperwork with the NHL then he is free to sign with any other league.

This is why long-term contracts in hockey is ludicrous!

Brian Lawton ‏@brianlawton9 11m In order to terminate the contract he needs to first retire. Then @NHLDevils can terminate the contract which they will. He can later decide

Mark Spector ‏@SportsnetSpec 10m @brianlawton9 AT which point can he play in the KHL, Brian? Ever?

Brian Lawton ‏@brianlawton9 2m @SportsnetSpec Nothing to stop him from signing for this season to play in KHL and once his contract is terminated nothing to stop him

Okay. Need to wrap my head around this.

is this correct? only a 250K cap recapture penalty per season until 2024-25?

That... that can't be right. It better not be right. This contract was he final nail that sent us to a lockout. If it's THAT easy to get out of, I am going to be pissed.

Renaud Lavoie ‏@RenLavoieRDS now Ilya Kovalchuk laisse 77 millions sur la table

dont have to be french to understand what this means

Can't wait to hear what the KHL offer is.

This is just insane...

based on this it is easy to deduce that he wasn't happy in NJ but why screw the team over like this...unless he tried to talk to him and they were receptive.

He has screwed more than the Devils. He screwed every NHL fan too.

He cant play in the KHL because NHL and KHL have an agreement not to take each other players so unless he is totally a FA he cant.

Other players have "retired" to void contracts. There is precedent. Once you "retire", you are UFA, technically.

I feel bad for young Russian players. Between him, Yashin and flakes like Zherdev, NO ONE is going to trust a Russian player for a long time.

Someone record ANYTHING Don Cherry has to say for the next month. It'll be worth keeping.

Would he be unable to sign in the NHL until his deal with the Devils would have ended?

This is what I thought was correct, but J Stew cleared it up.

It is correct ... the deeper the player is in the contract (ie more years) the higher the recapture penalty ... ie teams benefited more years from the back diving aspect and therefore are penalized more

Luongos recapture penalty would be 825K per until 2021-22

Yeah, seriously. That's extra shit topping on the shit sundae. Devils had no chance. Everyone is signed.

He would have driven up the price of some guys (and I am personally thankful).
