This is shocking. I mean he's been with the Devils for three years & then says goodbye. DAMN!! That BRUTAL. To make matters worse even if the Devils have the worst record in the league they aren't going to be able to draft Sam Reinhart.

Sam is coming to the Flames, methinks. It's one of those bad news, good news stories.

And the Devils owner is trying to bring in another majority owner for the team too?! And its his fucking fault he told Lou to sign Kovy in the first place?

GOD DAMN IT

yah ... im guessing the devils franchise have no issue with him retiring at all

that was quick!

Dan Rosen ‏@drosennhl now Lamoriello says Kovalchuk's contract is now void. He has signed the appropriate paperwork.

If he signs in SKA for this season, the league has to challenge his eligibility and force the IIHF suspension.

Seems mean, but they have to do it to protect themselves.

He must sit out the full season.

He can show up to the Olympics without playing there, but they simply cannot allow him to suit up in the KHL this year, it sets an absolutely dreadful precedence.

I will say when LA thought Kovy would sign with the Kings, I was happy that a big name UFA was looking our way. The longer the dealing went on the less happy I was. When the deal came down and I heard the numbers I was upset that the league allowed such a deal, sad that my team wasnt willing to stretch the rules but also happy because we all know he wouldnt play the whole length of the deal. I never thought he would leave this soon.
I dont know the rules about the Olympics but is there a chance he could be barred from that event? I know they have agreements but I dont know how this would fit.

I kind of like St Petersberg as a city and therefore I can see why he wants to move on - well that and probably the 20 mil tax free per year he's about to get

It sounds like Lou at least knew it was a possibility.

I always liked Kovalchuk. I thought he was underrated as an all around player (not that he was great defensively) in Atlanta and thought he was underrated overall because of his location and because of his actions in the World Juniors.

I wish him well. I do admit I might feel differently if he was leaving my team like this, but if he is leaving that much money to be closer to his family I kind of understand that too.

This just reinforced the reason why the devils needed to give up the 29th overall pick when they could.

I'm really hoping the league shows some pity, not sure why they would, the league generally seems to shit on the Devils.

I wouldn't be sad if they took your 2nd and 3rd round pick if your 1st is top 5. That said I still don't get keeping the 29th pick

Would he be unable to sign in the NHL until his deal with the Devils would have ended?

It is correct ... the deeper the player is in the contract (ie more years) the higher the recapture penalty ... ie teams benefited more years from the back diving aspect and therefore are penalized more

Luongos recapture penalty would be 825K per until 2021-22

woah

just heard on radio he can come back to the NHL after next season :omg:

It would look really bad on the league if they gave the Devils their 1st round pick back. The rest of the league would view it as every team in the league should get one pass on circumventing the salary cap.

Larry Brooks ‏@NYP_Brooksie 56s Source tells Post that NHL will not attempt to prevent Kovalchuk from playing in KHL. NHL return would have to be approved by every team.
