Ok, now even I dislike the guy.
(to be fair, meme probably created much earlier)
I will now send myself to the box to feel shame...
Doug Wilson must be a drafting hipster, he was against drafting Russians before it was cool...
If you dont factor in losing the draft pick and Parise, sure
How much does Lou pay Jagr?
woah
just heard on radio he can come back to the NHL after next season
never going to happen.
Your team signed him. Your team has to deal with the it. This is something that could happen to any team with Russian players. Burmistrov just bailed on the Jets. Every team that drafts or signs a Russian player better think long & hard about it first.
He cant play in the KHL because NHL and KHL have an agreement not to take each other players so unless he is totally a FA he cant.
Pardon my french but that is fucking retarded.
the other half of that 43, is that if someone retired at the VERY end of one of of these monster backdiving contracts that cap recovery penalty could be tens of millions of dollars in a year or two.It is correct ... the deeper the player is in the contract (ie more years) the higher the recapture penalty ... ie teams benefited more years from the back diving aspect and therefore are penalized more
Luongos recapture penalty would be 825K per until 2021-22
Kovalchuk & Clarkson scored 27% of the Devils goals over the last 2 seasons.....now it's up to Clowe & Ryder.Parise, Clarkson, now Kovalchuk. That's a lot of forward talent lost in the past year or so. Saw the impact of Parise's loss last year, gonna be tough dealing with the loss of Clarkson & Kovalchuk this year. Really feel bad for Devil fans.
still mind boggling that they didn't make that choice. This just reinforced the reason why the devils needed to give up the 29th overall pick when they could.
First off:
The contract was designed in a way that any lockout changes can be considered, which is why the recapture is that low. I think it could be even lower than $250,000 per year because last year's salaries were cut significantly. Kovy's first two years which occurred during the last CBA was actually lower than his salary cap hit. It only started to increase a lot last year.
2nd:
I'm upset as a Devils fan but very concerned as an NHL fan. I don't see how Russians can remain in the NHL because this opens up a massive hole in the system. Teams wont want to draft Russians anymore because of the huge risk and teams also wont sign Russians to long contracts anymore since there wont be any guarantee that they finish the contract. If these 2 things do happen, it would make playing in the KHL more reliable than playing in the NHL.
3rd:
It may just be wishful thinking since I'm a fan of the Devils but I think the NHL should set a precedence to prevent this from happening. Giving teams that lose players this way benefits such as draft picks or cap credits would soften the risk in signing Russians to longer term contracts.
2nd: Its happened once, why assume it will be a frequent thing at all? Not too many players would walk away from that money.
quick question. did he officially file his retirement papers? Man I still cant believe he did this after signing that contract and hurting the devils wow
yah ... im guessing the devils franchise have no issue with him retiring at all
that was quick!
Dan Rosen @drosennhl now Lamoriello says Kovalchuk's contract is now void. He has signed the appropriate paperwork.
3rd: A player wasn't happy on a team for whatever reason so he retired walking away from millions of dollars and you want the team to get rewarded?
Friedman saying Kovys new deal in russia will be close to 20 mill per ... announcement monday
