the other half of that 43, is that if someone retired at the VERY end of one of of these monster backdiving contracts that cap recovery penalty could be tens of millions of dollars in a year or two.
I think the principal of it was to recapture all of the cap savings that happened during the playing time of the contract, over the remaining term of the contract.

The more I am learning about Contracts, the more I am of the opinion that Pronger needs to retire.

in 2015.

Loyalty wise this guy makes Daniel Alfredsson look like Daniel Alfredsson circa 1997-2012.

Short term this is rough for the Devs, but man it's probably for the best long term.

Pronger has a 35+ contract and there are different penalties that apply if he retires. I'm not positive but I believe Philly would still keep his full cap hit if he retired.

That is correct.

He'll just stay on LTIR for ever, me thinks.

I think the reason the Devils kept the 29th was because they felt they had a good shot at winning an appeal from the league and rescinding that part of the penalty.

Whether or not that's true, and more importantly whether or not that's true now that Kovy bailed, I couldn't tell you.

This will change the dynamics big time with the CBA and NHL/KHL relations. It obviously will change the drafting and RFA/UFA signings of Russian players.

I didn't read the whole thread and have not been around for a few days so these things may have been discussed.

It will also have a negative effect on good Russian players that honestly see the NHL as the best league in the world and wanted to play here. Their bargaining power just took a huge hit.

How is the KHL funded, is it strictly private business or assisted by the Government? From all of the clips I've seen from their games they seem to play in smaller arenas and can't see how they can afford to dish out some of the contracts they do. If they pay most of the money to the star players this will really hurt very good players that want to play in the NHL because teams will shy away from them if their careers do take off when contract times come knowing the KHL will give them the money.

Not sure how the KHL will survive and as a last though Kovy is a dick for pulling this shit after the draft and the free agent market has dried up.

I get the sense the KHL is funded primarily by oil baron owners with bottomless pits of money as well as plastering as many advertisements as possible on the rink and jerseys.

Glass half full thinking says this should help the Devils out financially both short term and long term. Get new owners in, that contract is off the books, good crop of free agents next summer and some expiring contracts in the next year or 2 and the Devils are actually in great shape in that sense. This season will be a bit rough, I don't think they'll be terrible by any means, but Marty's career will likely end on a bit of a sour note.

lol

Although it seems having your parents involved in contract talks is the only thing that prevents you from entering the hall.

To be fair the guy's brains probably look like something from Taco Bell after it's been, um, processed.
