What a fucking punch to the stomach. Brutal news, fuck him. 3 years after you sign a 15 year deal? So do we get that pick back?

Weren't the Devs fined also $3 million for that cap circumvention contract which really didn't break any rules (along with losing a 1st round pick)

Parise, Clarkson, now Kovalchuk. That's a lot of forward talent lost in the past year or so. Saw the impact of Parise's loss last year, gonna be tough dealing with the loss of Clarkson & Kovalchuk this year. Really feel bad for Devil fans.

It is correct ... the deeper the player is in the contract (ie more years) the higher the recapture penalty ... ie teams benefited more years from the back diving aspect and therefore are penalized more

Luongos recapture penalty would be 825K per until 2021-22

More years as in more years in or more years left. He has 12 left doesn't he? Luongo doesn't have more than that.

My brain is spinning. I need some bylaws/rules to read here. I'm just not getting it.

that i havent heard ... but i bet Luongo wants to know the answer more than anyone out there

Didn't Hasek "retire" and then try to come back with other teams?

What was the Bruins cap situation with Tim Thomas before they shipped his contract to NYI? He was retired but still counted, right? How else would they have been able to trade an asset they didn't have the rights to trade?

devils will void the contract ... actual cash dollars that were going to be paid to Kovy were 11 to 11.8 million per year over the next 5 years

so you have to think he will be paid more than that over the next 5 years in the KHL tax free

should ease some of the financial problems the devils are having though

i could see the NHL having more of an issue with kovy retiring than the Devils do

What an A$$hole....Sorry I feel for all of you Devils fans right now. So he screwed the team so that they lost out of FA money at the beginning of the FA period and why didn't he just do that last season so they Devils could still have had Parise.

like i said above the more years a player has burned under a back diving contract the more the team that handed out the contract has benefited from the back diving contract ... thus ... the higher the recapture penalty

more years as in more years completed on the contract.. the cap recapture penalty is based on how much cap space you saved because of the back diving contract.. ie, you had a 10 mil salary with a 7 mil cap hit, for 5 years and retired after 1, your team only saved 3 mil in cap space.. rather than if you had retired after 4 years, your team saved 12 mil in cap space

.. i think

If Lou knew he should've traded him during the season...

any team making that deal would have done its due diligence to make sure a retirement wasnt on the horizon because of this:

If Ilya Kovalchuk retires or defects in the 2013 off-season (age 30 as of July 1 that year), and was traded to the Anaheim Ducks 50 percent of the way through the 2012-13 season, following is an estimated breakdown of the recapture penalties for the involved teams.

Team Benefit Cap benefit the team received (total salary payment less total cap hit) while the player was on the team prior to retirement. Teams do not receive a credit for seasons with negative cap benefit (where cap hit exceeds salary). Penalty Cap penalty charged to the team each season following retirement until the end year of the contract. Penalties do not apply to teams which traded a player prior to the new CBA agreement in 2012.

New Jersey Devils (2013-14 through 2024-25) $833,333 $69,444
Anaheim Ducks (2013-14 through 2024-25) $2,166,667 $180,556

and good luck to Lou ever being able to make a deal/trade with another team ever ever EVER again ... would have been the ultimate screw job on the other team

It's getting clearer. :)

Still a pretty low penalty overall.

Especially when you consider their regular season is only 54 games compared to 82.

@dchesnokov: Source close to Kovalchuk said he saw it coming. Most likely Kovalchuk will play for SKA. Major announcement will come soon.

This is shocking. I mean he's been with the Devils for three years & then says goodbye. DAMN!! That BRUTAL. To make matters worse even if the Devils have the worst record in the league they aren't going to be able to draft Sam Reinhart.
