Amusing to read back an old like this and see comments along the lines of, "the shine is off Tatum"... "Tatum has plateaued"... etc.

I seem to recall that there was a fair bit of that sort of thinking last season...

... Jayson showing how foolish all that talk was this year.

To be fair, if memory serves, at least a couple of those were Celtics fans.

Whom? @The Q? He's dour in general, but I don't remember him saying anything that extreme.

I personally never said anything like that... but I do recall saying that a team with Jayson Tatum as the best player will likely never win a title.

Don't remember exactly who. To be fair though. Even your comment about him represents a step back from what was being said about him going into the season.

I just remember "talking a couple of folks off the roof" and saying Kyrie was the problem.

I thought both him and brown were overvalued.

Fair enough.

Speaking for myself: I'm not stepping back from anything. I still do not think that a team which has Tatum as the best player is likely to win a championship. Guy has too much trouble finishing at the rim.

That said: one thing I'll give Tatum tremendous credit for is how hard he works. Dude is a gym rat who wants and wills to get better and better. So I could be wrong... (and would be happy to be so, of course :))

The bold is why I think he can be that player. Maybe not right now, as you point out, there are things he needs to improve. The first step to that is being willing to put in the work.

or traded for kawhi and brad has a ring.
Hindsight is 20/20 and all that... as previously discussed, Kawhi had major concerns at the time.

I know I said I thought the Knicks had a better AD package than the Celtics did. Mostly because their pieces were younger and under team control longer. Also liked the idea of pairing Barrett with Zion.

Honestly though, pretty sure most if not all thought Tatum would likely be an all star caliber player someday. I just didn’t think he had much ceiling beyond that. And I still don’t.

Like you said, very good player, but probably not ever going to be that superstar caliber cornerstone of an NBA champ. But although odds are slim, I won’t totally rule out that possibility.

One of which was Kawhi doing to the Celtics exactly what he just did to the Raptors.

And to be fair, he did, but sensible fans knew he season of kind of plateauing wasnt enough for a kid this talented. He’s made another step and like I said many times, he needed to make that second step to give a C’s a good chance to contend in the East. They are right in the mix and still dangerous come playoff time

Looking at his stats, the only thing that has changed from last year to this year are a few more minutes per game and taking more shots. Percentages, rebounds, assists, etc are all within the same basic range. Turnovers are up a little and his overall FG% is down (taking a lot more 3s).

Most players can't just up their production from 15/16 ppg to 22-ish ppg at the same efficiency levels, though... Tatum is shooting way more 3's, too.... (at a great % for a high volume taker)

His defense is night and day different than last year, as well.

Defense is the one thing that stats never accurately measure, and I don't watch the Celtics much.

There’s god individual defense and good team defense.

Guys who are better team defenders get rated better in analytics. It’s why am Avery Bradley is underrated by the metrics. GreAt one on one defender but his poor team d drags his ratings down

The basic stats tend to reward risk-takers instead of solid defenders (steals and blocks).

What are the odds that these two tampons will spend more games in suits on the sidelines than in actual uniforms during their time with the Nets?

Not sure but I know the odds of these two jabronis winning a ring together are about 1000-1
