Also I want to add one more reason why the 49ers will draft a QB. Kaep rookie contract runs out at the end of next season, having a highly touted rookie on the roster in addition to the a vet would help give the 49ers some leverage when negotiating Kaep next contract IMO.

HaroldSeattle;4085004 Drafting a QB next year doesn't mean the 49ers are replacing Kaep next year said:
Draft...if you notice, I didn't say they should not draft a QB...It largely depends on which pick they use on the QB...if they go 1st or 2nd rd, even on a team as good a SF, you need that pick to be playing a role of some kind next yr. If they go 3rd rd or lower...plan B as you say.

Vet QB...Colt McCoy? You don't think they can do better? Seriously? I differ w/ you on that.

In theory that sounds good, but you're not getting highly touted picking in the high 20s.

Yeah I know McCoy isn't great, but who's on the market that is better? Decent backups are in short supply in the NFL.

.

That's true...they are hard to find, but most of these guys are available, but expensive. If SF waved a 3rd round pick to a team like PIT (likely going nowhere this season) for Gradkowski...they would have to seriously consider it.

Just had a wild thought. What if the Bears don't resign Cutler? Could the 49ers go after him? I don't see how he would fit in their cap situation, because Cutler is going to get a fairly large contract from someone.
I still think drafting a rookie QB with upside is the best way to go.

I don't know much about Gradkowski, so I looked up his career stats and I don't see any thing that indicate he would be the answer.

Bruce Gradkowski - Pittsburgh Steelers - 2013 Player Profile - Rotoworld.com

Stats...Idk if that's the best way to evaluate a backup, but having faced him on several teams, the guy can play...he's not starter material, but for 5 or 6 games I think you can win with him.

On a guy like Cutler...that brings up an interesting topic that SEA will also be facing soon.

Most playoff caliber teams, the cap money is heavily weighted on the QB. SF, SEA, will be in a severe cap reshaping mode soon as the QB contracts come up for renewal...they won't be able to keep those high priced DEF players.

I touched on the cap situation in the post before this one...SF would likely need to turn their roster upside down to fit a guy like Cutler next yr. A draft pick that I like a lot is the kid from LSU...Mettenberger...recently injured so he could drop into the 2nd or 3rd round. He was heading towards a top 10 spot prior to the injury.

No doubt both teams rosters are going to making some changes. The offseason will be interesting to say the least.

Getting back to Kaep, the 49ers are going to still hope he can be their franchise QB, but they need more time to know. It's a situation that screams "hope for the best, but plan for the worse" With all those young guys they drafted that couldn't play or couldn't play much and 10 draft choices, drafting a rookie QB to groom just in case makes the most sense to me. It gives them a plan B, it helps with the cap and it will help when they negotiate Kaeps contract.

Seems like a no brainer to me.

Ignoring that he's a bad QB, he's a worse fit in SF. A turnover-prone QB doesn't put their defense in position to be successful.

I think both were over hyped...sorry but RG3 screamed injury prone to me the day he was drafted and Kaep i don't believe has the mental quickness that NFL QB's must posses.

I'm reserving judgement on Kaep until next year. Sure he hasn't played up to expectations this season but he hasn't had any epic meltdowns or anything. Could be the ol' sophomore slump. By this time next year the book will be written on Kaep.

I would love nothing more than for the star up-and-coming QB on my team's chief division rival to end up as a bust but it's too early to tell IMO.

As much as I hate to admit it, Harbaugh is a great QB coach and would make Cutler a much better QB.

Sure you can.

Whoever takes on the coaching job in Washington is going to be expected to fix RG3's stupid decisions with his body and the ball. Oh wait.... I forgot, when RG3 does or says dumb things it can be chalked up to competitiveness.

Cutler has had talent around him plenty of times and lost his team game after game. With slightly less terrible surrounding play than this year, RG3 carried his team. If shanahan didn't insist on shredding his knee up with the offensive gameplan after the reinjury, he beats you in the playoffs last year.

JDM, just loves him some, RGIII. Somehow he has a different grading scale for him, than he does for Kaepernick.

If games were only ten minutes long the Broncos beat the Pats last week.

Comebacks are nothing new to Russell Wilson and the Seahawks. That 14 point jump coincided with 2 Seattle 3 and outs, after that, they moved the ball at will.
