Memphis was robbed of a chance to go undefeated at Temple by a very controversial call. Would there be any clamor to include them in the CFP had they won the game at Temple and were 13-0?

I think there would have been clamor, but no real argument to include them.

My point is this: No matter how good a G5 team is, they will never be included in the CFP.

They should change college football D-1 to three tiers and let the teams in G5 play for a championship.

Thoughts?

Honestly, I think it will take a world wind of luck to make it. It would take a perfect season, and incredible foresight as well. If a G5 team scheduled 3-4 P5 teams, won the games, and they were all seriously in title hunt or conference title hunt... I would say I would have a hard time keeping them out.

If Cincinnati beat OSU this year and was our only loss, and then won the AAC, they're in the playoff.

All it takes is beating one really good P5 OOC and running the table in your conference.

I do think that is a fair point. But this year was extremely abnormal.

I think Memphis (13-0) would have been worthy of the #4 spot, but I don't the Committee would have ever ranked them there.

It's not often that three P5 teams go unbeaten in the same season through 13 games. Years like this, it would be extremely difficult. However, if we're looking at some of the other seasons, it's very possible. Look at 2009, we had two G5 teams in the top 6 along with Cincinnati.

If Cincy beat OSU? They lost 42-0!

If Memphis had beaten Temple they would have had 5 top 25 wins and a win over an SEC opponent. How may top25 wins does Clemson have? Oklahoma? They would stlll not be in.

The AAC should be a P5(6) conference, but they are not. I think that Memphis, Cincinnati, UCF, Navy and SMU would all have finished better than Virginia in the ACC this year.

Too bad Ole Miss sucked. If they were a good team, it could've happened.

I'm aware of how bad they lost. I'm saying if they were to win that sort of game, and that P5 goes 12-1 and wins their conference, that gets an unbeaten G5 in, no question.

I think that they would have been worthy also, but I am extremely biased. Would Memphis have won the Big12? Probably not. Would they have had a chance in the Pac12? Maybe, but probably not.

My point is what are the G5 teams playing for? Mot much. I like that the Tigers are going to the Cotton Bowl and have a chance to play against Penn St.

I just don't think that the committee ever lets a G5 in.

Hypothetical: Memphis beats Temple and is 13-0. OU loses to Baylor in Big12 Championship. Cincinnati somehow beats OSU and loses twice to Memphis. Is Memphis in? Remember, they had more top25 wins than Baylor or Clemson.

You're a little too new to be swinging your junk around here starting all these threads.

How's about you just lurk for a while?

If you are a great G5 team, you can opt for 1 of 3 options (all assume you go undefeated):

1) Schedule weak teams, and hope the other G5 teams have 1+ losses to get a NY6 game (UCF route)
2) Schedule 1 marquee OOC opponent, hope that you win the game and then be assured of a NY6 game (Boise St route)
3) Schedule 3-4 marquee OOC opponents, hope they all have good to great seasons, hope for 2 P5 conference champs to have 2+ losses and pray for a CFP spot (no elite G5 team has attempted this to my knowledge in the CFP era)

No.

Baylor's SOS is 28.
Memphis' SOS is 70 (would be worse with an additional Temple loss)

The problem with #3 is that almost no marquee OOC opponents will schedule a team like Memphis. They can't afford to lose.
