Maddon's a great manager, he should catch on with another team soon.

What would you say makes him great?

He is a game manager. The Rays have never played for the 3 run homer. Stealing bases, hit and run, and sacrifices are his forte. He is a competent Ned Yost.

The Rays have been competitive in the East with a relatively small pay roll. If I had a young team I would be calling him ASAP.

Hmm the way he won with that organization

the way shitty players came to play for him and contributed

His work with the shift

the way he changes his lineup daily to succeed.

Game managing

The list is extensive. There is a reason he's so highly thought of and is able to just leave a team like that..

Gawd I hope the replay system is more streamlined if he goes somewhere relevant. Maddon challenged 48 calls and not even half of them were overturned -- Pathetic!
Now the Rays need to get rid of EmoHair Manchild Myers while they have a chance.

Another memorable Madden move was him realizing one year that righties were hitting Mike Mussina better than lefties, so instead of doing what most managers would do traditionally and have a fair amount of lefties in there (vs the righty Mussina), he had 8 right-handed batters in the lineup (made all the switch hitters bat righty), and they scored 6 runs off Mussina.

He was in stalled talks negotiating an extension. This is the day he was given to opt out. Shit or get off the pot, he will get offers from elsewhere, I dont doubt he gets an offer from Tampa Bay.

Dave Martinez is ready to manage so I guess the Rays owners felt they had bullets for negotiations, this was Maddons only bullet.

becuz of financial limitations he's been forced to actually manage. You don't win that many games with kids and washed up role players without knowing what you're doing. A guy like Girardi rolls the ball on the field and says "go get'em guys" . that's all the managing he does. Maddon is head and shoulders above any mgr in the game today. There's enough of a demand for him a team will fire their mgr to get him. Maddon will decide where he wants to go and not many mgrs. can do that.

So glad the Mets are committed to Collins, there's no way they could use a guy like this just as they're on the cusp of becoming a real team.

IMO Girardi is the best manager in baseball.

He's maintained a competitive team with an awful rotation and the worst shortstop in the game for about three years running.

Spot on. It was simply time for Maddon to get paid. I expect Martinez to pick up where he left off. The Rays are in good hands (Manager-wise)...

And, Maddon is a perfect fit with the Cubs. They have the farm system that the Rays had ten years ago. His ability to manage younger players will serve him well.

(Also, Sox fans will remember this tid-bit -- Maddon was Theo Epstein's original first-choice in 2004 before hiring Terry Francona.)
