Maddon said his decision to leave the club was a combination of financial issues and curiosity over what opportunities will present themselves. Maddon said there was discussion with the Rays on a new contract but "we were still too far apart."

"I have been doing this for a long time," Maddon told the newspaper. "I have never had this opportunity to research my employment on my terms. Never, never, never. And I think anybody given the same set of circumstances would do the same thing."

Interesting that he says it is about the money...

I wonder if Tampa realizes they have a potentially better manager in Dave Martinez on the bench. I also wonder if Maddon will tkae his guys with him.... This will be fun to watch.

Seriously, after Gardenhire you'd welcome this guy's antics?

Absolutely. Gardy sucked complete ass.

Maddon knows baseball, he knows winning.

Id take him in a heartbeat.

After all those years in Tampa he will finally be able to cash in big time on that opportunity. I could see him going to the Dodgers, even though he said he wouldn't, but we know how truthful managers/head coaches can be. He did his time in Tampa, I didn't get to watch too many of their games only when they played the Yankees and he always seemed to be able to out coach our manager. Maybe he'll go to the Cubs and make it really interesting up there.

I thought so.

I mean it usually is about the money and there's nothing wrong with that but it's very, very rare that people publicly say so.

+1

My favorite bullshit 'reason' was when Mike Hampton signed his huge deal to go to Colorado, and said it was for the schools for his kids...
