you still believe in the tooth fairy don't you

Okay, you don't like Staal for turning down the Pens contract offer, and I can understand that, but he gave the Pens six great years and helped bring the Stanley Cup back to Pittsburgh. He was never going to supplant Crosby or Malkin and the Pens aren't going to get rid of either of those guys, so it's time to move on. The Pens got a nice return in the trade and are loading up again for years to come as Stanley Cup contenders.

8.7 mil a year is to much,,,,how many games did he miss last year???????

that was well spent wasn't it

For the 5th best player in the league, that's cheap..All sports are a gamble, stars get hurt, it's part of the game. But when it comes down to playoff times then you ask yourself, Was it worth it..

well it's like this,,,Crosby played very little last year including the playoffs around 30 games,he's one good hit away from being done,I would have dropped Crosby and kept Staal,,,,,,,,,some say Crosby is the best playing the game right now,,,he's not much help sitting on the sidelnes watching,,,just my thoughts

Staal didn't ask for a trade, was willing to stay in Pittsburgh (just not at 10 years), never asked to go ANYWHERE, Shero said it himself. SHERO moved him, quite astutely, because he saw both that he may lose him to FA and the opportunity to go in a new direction. This move not only brought more depth the to teams farm system (great depth BTW, young defenseman are the best trade chips) but brought about the opportunity to clear cap space and make a pretty huge splash (Parise/Suter/other FAs).

I understand that philosophy. It's hard for us as non-millionaires to imagine turning down that much money. But it would be the equivilant of taking a pay raise that's guaranteed, but never having the chance to get promoted or move, see what you can do. You can't deny that he was stuck behind two players that he'd never be better than. He won a Cup here, but you can't blame the guy for wanting to move on and see the grass on the other side. Also: it's a lot easier to turn down that deal as a 24 year old. He'd make more on the market. He'll probably make more in CAR too...he's #1C there.

I think it is just a matter of time before the Pens let Crosby go,when he was injured yeah you miss some games but hell Crosby missed around 60 games last year if that carries over again to this coming season he will be on the market as well,it doesn't matter how good you are if you can't play

He's not going anywhere. I do await your reaction once he signs his lifeterm deal next week though. Thinking between 5-10 years. More towards 10 is my guess.

Interesting quote, haha:

@reporterchris
Brian Burke on missing out on J. Staal: "We didn't have a brother named Staal. That was part of the problem."

Mr. Burke: also doesn't help that you have pretty much nothing I'd really want.

Personally, I think the Pens got the better of the deal. After watching the events unfold yesterday, my thinking was some of these GM's have stock in the Penguins. They just made a very good team much better.

a lifetime deal,,,he would have to play next season and be his old self without the old injury coming back before he would get that from me

Well we got worse. I have faith that Shero has a plan with the cap space though. I wish Jordan the best of luck and will be following his career closely. Enjoy, Carolina fans. He's a unique player.

Also enjoy fans of every other team making offers for Jordan and in the next sentence talking about how he isn't that good.

Well, he has a chance at being the first line guy. When it comes down to it, they could just be 1a and 1b. I stand by my feeling that he could be the best Staal at the end of their careers.

I dreamt last night the Pens traded a first after the Maatta pick (2013's, I guess) for EJ.

Perish the thought
