Says if a team came a callin' the Giants this week and offered a 3rd round pick, can't help but think things could get interesting.

Doubt it but he can sure rush the passer as a 43 DE which we play a lot of. Thankfully we re-signed Brooks so Osi isn't that much of a need. But there is always greed. :)

 For sure, and for a 3rd rounder? You can't ask for better value. It probably isn't smart in terms of the cap, though. I like the thinking because depth on the defensive front will be important to address. It isn't as important as RG, CB and WR, but it is at least 4th on the priority list. Some people could have it fifth, behind Safety depth, but since the draft is deeper up front and we're talking about trading a pick...

I texted my NYer about this and he thinks the Giants would agree to a 3rd for Osi, but that trading Osi would eliminate their capability to play a 3 DE line on passing downs.

And no, he couldn't play 3-4 DE, nor would he make the transition.

Osi makes WAY too much money to be a situational pass rusher.

Osi costs $1.5M more than Haralson next year.

How much is that exactly? I can'r find it? All I know is that he's in teh final year of a pretty large contract.

A 3rd round pick for a guy with 1 year on his contract is a pretty steep price.

Osi's base salary is a tad under 4mil for the upcoming season.
Haralson's cap hit is just under 3mil, and we'd save 2.45mil in base salary if he was cut.

I stand corrected. I thought it was like 7 million...

That would be fine for a situational pass rusher. However, the 3rd rounder for 1 season is far too much.

3.975M base salary for next year. At the end of 2005 he signed a 7-year deal worth $41.38M and $15M guaranteed. That's all I can find right now.

Osi would never move to LB and should never be a DE on a 3-4 in any situation.

And nobody is suggesting that. We play A LOT of 43. I like Osi over Brooks on those downs. It also seems like he should be had for less than a third round pick considering the fact he has just said the team trading for him doesn't need to give him a new contract. He's clearly gonna walk from the Giants after the season so they should get what they can for him now.

Osi Umenyiora - DL - Giants

Osi Umenyiora made it clear Wednesday that any team trading for him would not have to extend his contract.
Expecting to have the best year of his career, Umenyiora is happy to play out the last year of his contract to hit the free agent market in 2013. Umenyiora expects trade talk to heat up over the next few days, and suggests he and the Giants have many "issues" to work through.
