It's time to ask the board: where do we rank Steph Curry all time?

He's obviously on the back nine of a brilliant career. He's a tough one to categorize. The numbers are there, the rings are there, 2 time MVP, the game changing nature of his play are there...but he never felt like he was some big time alpha dog except maybe 2022

I think he falls somewhere in the 9-13 range...maybe a bit homerish but think about the names that far back...top 3 is a given, top 7 really...then you just kind of compare players like KD and Malone and Curry and Duncan and so on...

So I'll say 11 for now. Need to think about my top 10 again.

What say y'all?

OK so not to make into a top 10 thing but I had to rank guys to decide where to put Steph.

Top 2 obvious. Top 3 really MJ LeBron Kareem in some order. Then you get to the middle, in some order: Magic, Bird, Wilt, Hakeem, Kobe, Shaq right?

I mean after 9 you are right in the 'some order' area of Duncan, Malone, KD, Steph Curry (the OP), Bill Russell, Oscar, right? So Curry fits at 11 reasonably

Duncan should be in the middle group. Before Kobe passed I don’t think many had him better than a borderline top 10 player

I know i'm guilty of romanticizing the past so it's difficult for me to put current players ahead of some of the greats I grew up watching. But he's just an incredible player. I think when we are all able to look back on his career after he's been retired for a while, I think we will find a way to put him in the top 10.

OK switch them then. Curry still fits right there at 11

SIDE QUESTION:

Who is the all timer highest on this list who did not ever win a title? Gotta be Karl Malone right?

I’m taking Big O and Magic before Kareem.

Kobe not in my Top Ten.

Dirk, the Logo, KG…

Shaq higher. I got Steph ahead of Bill Russell fwiw.

I hope he plays till he’s old as hell.

Love watching him. Looking forward to four years from now when he gets to be on home turf in LA.

I asked AI this question(since I’ve never seen Curry play) and it gave me the following list. Since AI is smarter than all of us, I’m going to say he’s 17th overall:
  1. Michael Jordan
  2. LeBron James
  3. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
  4. Bill Russell
  5. Magic Johnson
  6. Larry Bird
  7. Wilt Chamberlain
  8. Shaquille O'Neal
  9. Kobe Bryant
  10. Tim Duncan
  11. Hakeem Olajuwon
  12. Oscar Robertson
  13. Kevin Durant
  14. Charles Barkley
  15. Dirk Nowitzki
  16. Moses Malone
  17. Stephen Curry
  18. Jerry West
  19. Elgin Baylor
  20. Allen Iverson

Well I said “some order” so Shaq could be as high as 5 for me. I usually go 1a 1b then Kareem then Magic, Wilt, Shaq, Bird. Russell is barely top 20 to me but some folks have him up here

AI undervaluing Curry here. He’s better than Dirk and KD and maybe Moses too. But yeah it’s hard to really compare that area from 8 or so to 20

Russell is obviously wrong and only a robot would think that LOL

But is he better than Jerry West and Elgin Baylor? Isn’t Curry just a rich-man’s George Gervin? Does he play any defense? I know he’s one of the best pure shooters of all-time.

I don't know where he ranks all time as far as holistically great players go, but he is certainly top 3 in how completely fucking helpless he could make you feel when he was feeling it.

Nothing worse than watching him start draining 28 footers and knowing that the game was already over.

I’ve heard the elders in my family talk about Russell and how he changed the game completely. The blocked shot wasn’t even a thing before he came along. He was a man amongst boys(and the 11 championships don’t hurt)!

Very solid team defender yes. Does a fuck ton more than Gervin, he's their leading assist guy too usually. And rings matter, and MVPs matter, so he's better than Baylor and West, yes.

Man amongst boys is the problem though. It's why Wilt (and Oscar) gets downgraded a bit too. And Wilt was WAY better at basketball than Russell. He was basically Ben Wallace.
