Is that the first Pedro has been mentioned!?!

Most dominant guy Ive ever seen with my own eyes, I think.

Definitely a Time Machine worthy matchup.

No. He was my pick in post five....

He was (imo) the best pitcher of the past 30-40 years. How he would stand up against Walter Johnson, Christy Matthewson, Sandy Koufax, Cleveand Alexander, Warren Spahn, et al. is why we need to invent a time machine....

Who are you putting on the Mound?????

For Myself I would put Randy Johnson out there. He had the nastiest Slider known to man and I saw him pitch a perfect game in person and he was incredible. Plus he was clutch in the Postseason.

impossible to disagree with this. Johnson was hands down the most intimidating/dominant pitcher I have seen in my 5 decades. He scared me just watching him on TV.

As good as Maddux was in the regular season I always thought he was subpar in the postseason. Idk if
I could trust him.

I'm the biggest Maddux fan in history but his post season history is avg IMO. Overall he was the best in my lifetime but for one game I'm going with the freak.

Why do you say that?
3.3 era in postseason including a 2.1 in the world series, 2.1 is much better than his career ERA while 3.3 is right around there. Not to mention he was one of the best fielding pitchers and one of the best command pitchers of all time.

best fielding pitcher in history , best command in history and the smartest pitcher I've ever seen.

I loved hearing the Maddux stories.... To certain sluggers, he would serve up a specific fast ball to a specific location in spring training, knowing they would crush it. During the seaon, they would be looking for that pitch, and would never get it.... One of his catchers also claimed that he put down the sign, and put up the mitt, then looked toward the dugout. While he wasn't watching, Maddux hit the mitt....

Definitely tall, ugly and scary. Certainly the most intimidating....

But not as dominant as Pedro Martinez.

On what planet is a 3.27 ERA over 198 innings in a largely hitter-friendly era 'average?'

for a guy who I consider the greatest pitcher in the modern era that is avg. Go drum up all your stats and remember I'm Maddux's biggest fan. Then go look at his PS history and the starts that were huge starts/must win/series changing/series winning starts and he didn't get it done often enough. If I started a thread about Maddux being the best in 75 yrs you would be the 1st one here to rip him to shreds so let's not kid ourselves. You are disputing what I said simply becuz I said it like you always do.

Since Randy Johnsons 372 strikeouts in 2001, the next highest total from a player not named Randy was 277 by Darvish in 2013. That's how dominant Randy was.

Look at his strikeout totals. Insane!

He is the all time leader in K/9 @ 10.609.

Take away his 3 bad years in Seattle and his K/BB would be on par with Pedro Martinez... But including those three years he falls to 37th....

And, with career ERA+'s of 154 to 135, you have to give the 'dominance' edge to Pedro...

But, two great pitchers - both pitching in the same era. All of us that are old enough to have watched both are very lucky....

The guy on the bump tonight for the G-men. Flat out as nasty as they come.

Post-15337-Christian-Bale-confused-gif-Hje6.gif

So if your life depended on it and you had to choose one pitcher, you'd choose Madison Bumgarner?

If we are talking about now, he certainly makes the short list (see my earlier post).

If we are talking all-time, I agree, he isn't there yet.

He certainly pulled a Pedro last night.... If he can put that type of dominance into his career, he might be able to climb the charts....

Koufax if I needed a lefty, Gibson if I needed a right hander.

It becomes a very interesting comparison when you look at it closer....

Pedro over his career of 2827 innings had a 154 ERA+, 1.05 WHIP and 4.15 K/BB.

Johnson by comparison had 1300 more innings than Pedro, but if you break it down, he had a 2775 inning stretch (close to Pedro's career total) from 1993-2005 where he had a 160 ERA+, 1.08 WHIP and 4.28 K/BB.

So basically, Johnson had a Pedro-like 'career' within his career, with an additional 1300 innings of being mediocre for the most part.
