How many carries did the UW RB's have vs Browning and then look at pass attempts. The numbers don't lie.

Washington vs. Arizona State - Box Score - October 14, 2017 - ESPN

It's kind of a Chris Petersen thing to do to use the pass to set up the run. I disagree with that fundamentally and would like seeing more of the opposite, especially with a defense as exceptional as ours. I'm no coach, but I've always believed that if you have a strong defense, your emphasis should be on the running game. If you have a weak defense, the passing game so that you can catch up when you need to. Right now I believe that the Huskies' biggest strength is the defense and should therefore emphasis a power run game. But that's just a fundamental belief of mine.

In terms of blame I think you can equally distribute it between the offensive line, Browning, the WRs lack of separation and the play-calling. Either way, I don't think you can deny that it was the most disappointing offensive performance of the Petersen era.

In other words, I agree with your criticism of Smith, but don't think it's entirely on him. Prior to Tedford I could not fucking stand the plays he called. I'm wondering if Tedford was the reason for the improvement.

It was last year's USC game all over again. The RB's didn't get shit for carries in that loss also.

What’s the catch? A bird’s-eye view of UW’s receivers

@AlaskaGuy @mcnabb7542

Pretty interesting analysis. The writers here seem to think it wasn't entirely Smith's fault, but a combination of things.

I think a good counterfactual to apply to this situation would be, "Does UW win this game with a different offensive coordinator?"

The answer I'd say is maybe. There were many other problems aside from the play calling in addition to it.

It reads exactly what we have said on here, and the bottom line is : Jake will not push the ball down field cause of bad routes or lack of trust in the receiver ....

I know the bye week after a tough lose is well it sucks, but I honestly feel the Dawgs will make adjustments and move forward. After watching yesterday games there is Bama, and everyone else behind them.

I think with SC being exposed on National TV, the hope is for ASU to continue this run they are on right now to the CCG. If the Dawgs can run the table with the remainder of their schedule with some blow outs mixed in, (including dominating Stanford @ home) they could be right back on track.

Getting ASU in the CCG then blowing them out there will show that once lose was nothing to lose sleep over.

Even though I believe UW is vastly more talented than ASU, a blow out against a team that shut you down on offense once earlier in the season is a tall order.

I'll give you that!

But let me ask you this, do you honestly believe Graham can out coach Petersen?

Cause let's face it, Graham pulled that defensive change out of his ass a couple weeks ago and I don't think he can do it again

Bit of recruiting news...

4 star Idaho defensive tackle (#53 overall #3 DT) Tommy Togiai will be making his recruitment decision next week. Right now he is down to Ohio State and UW. He has offers from most major programs and took his visit to UW on October 7th.

He is a much needed acquisition for the Huskies. I don't believe UW had a DT commit last recruiting class, and missed out on Marlon Tuipulotu last year. Our only defensive tackle commit so far this year is Draco Bynum, who is a bit undersized at 250lbs.

Wow, just realized UW hasn't had a DT commit since 2015. Yikes.

Vita Vea will almost certainly be going pro, and there is a possibility that Greg Gaines may follow. UW could be very thin at DT next year. Not only is Togiai a great prospect, he has the size and physicality to make an impact early on. He's a guy the Huskies could really need.

Although Utah has a terrible offense, ASU shut them down pretty good too. Maybe they figured something out? Time will tell. They're definitely a team to key your eye on though.

ASU had one of the shittiest run defenses in the conference ... that's probably why Smith decided to throw against them all night even though it obviously wasn't working. The guy is a tard.

This was one of my biggest issues. It seems as if he has issue sticking with the run.

Especially in a game when a bunch of kids from the Pacific Northwest are going to be grinding out a game in 80-90 degree heat, you're going to want to give your defense a bit of rest by pounding the rock and tiring out the ASU defense.

But once again, I'm biased because I've always believed in a strong run game to compliment a strong defense.

Kind of random, but:

I was thinking about how excited I am to finally have a day game again (sad, I know) and then looked at the match-ups for Saturday, and now I'm pissed. Past two weeks have had some pretty shitty games, yet this week there are a bunch of ranked teams facing off.

Of course the one damn Saturday the Huskies get a noon kickoff time there are a bunch of games I'd wanna watch.

I'm not much for taping shit and watching it later. For me it's not as fun if it's not live.

In today's episode of "I wish Ted Tedford was our offensive coordinator"

He seems to be doing quite well at Fresno State right now. For all the talk about UW's weak non-conference schedule, Fresno State has played well. They are 5-2 with their two losses being @ Alabama and UW. They got slaughtered by both UW and Alabama, but have outscored their opponents 199-33 in their five wins. That's an average score of 39.8 to 6.6.

He's always been a good coach. Wish it was Jonathan Smith who took the Fresno State job.

One of those wins was 27-3 at SDSU. Same school that beat ASU and Stanford.

ASU was playing cover 4 and bringing the safeties down in it most of the night. And they were not blitzing as they expected them to. Normally cover 4 is a sort of zone prevent defense, but the way they ran it it was designed to give them up to 9 in the box and prevent the run. Sure, UW should have still ran and asserted their dominance. Good running teams wouldn't care how many you bring down. In UW's case they over thought things and tried to exploit those zones and really struggled to get guys open and/or get the damned ball to them. It was a horrible day at the office for that offense and that includes the staff.

After USC just got their shit pushed in by ND the Huskies best chance now is to have ASU win out and for UW to blow them the fuck up in Levi Stadium to end the year. Their overall SoS is more weak than anyone would have guessed going into the year. Utah isn't good, UCLA is on the ropes, WSU got knocked down quite a bit by Cal (and likely have more losses coming), and now there probably won't be a ranked team in the South to play the CCG against.

I'm still not convinced they will run the rest of the table anyway, but if USC wins the South I don't see a path to the playoffs going 12-1 against this schedule. Had USC won against ND things would be different, but now I see why OD is so mad at the condoms. :gaah:

@WizardHawk @mcnabb7542 @AlaskaGuy

What do you guys think the odds are that Josh Rosen has a good game against the Huskies? Our secondary is quite deep, and has performed extremely well this year, but we are down our initial #1 and #2 corners.

I was thinking about it, and I honestly can't remember the last time an opposing QB had an objectively "good game" against the Huskies. Dawkins had a good game against us last year, but most of his contribution was on the ground.

Sam Darnold is really the only one I can think of in the last two years, and he even threw 2 picks. I think in terms of talent, Rosen is on pair, maybe better than Darnold depending on what traits you value. What can we expect from Rosen at UW? Is there any chance that Rosen tears up the UW secondary and keeps UCLA in this game?

Hard to say if the UW DL doesn't put pressure on him. I think if they get to Rosen a few times early on they can rattle him some.

Hopefully.

Issue is that the Huskies lack a strong edge rush presence. Also, Rosen's quick release and ability to fit balls into really tight spaces could mitigate any pass rush the Huskies generate.

This is also a pretty big game for Rosen in terms of solidifying his draft position. I think the key is to exploit his aggressiveness and try to create turnovers. He will arguably be going up against the best defense he has ever faced in his career, which bodes well for the Huskies. The biggest issue is, with the exception of Darnold, I don't believe the Huskies have faced a QB the past two years even remotely close to the caliber of Rosen.
