How dumb is it to say that Manning choked?

They certainly didn't do much to stop the passing of Russell Wilson. He only had 208 yards passing but his passes were lasers and they were dead nut on target.

have to give Seattle's WR credit for actually catching those balls though

It is a flight of fantasy to say that P. Manning choked. That said, you have all missed the obvious in this thread. Average QBs when facing superior defenses rarely step up to become anything more than what they are. What we have witnessed since the rule changes that now allow for more offense is an overblown and overhyped impression as to what great is. Imagine Mr. Manning having to play in the era when anything less than murder was legal. Granted there will be some who will say that he would destroy in that instance, but let's see if the evidence supports that. Any guesses what his record is when facing teams that plays like Seattle?? Sure he's great when he's able to throw to wide open pass catchers, but then, just as is the case for a few teams now, he would be playing every game against teams who pressed his wideouts, took his TE out of play, and limited YAC.

Let's face it, without the rule changes that practically neutered defenses, Mr. Manning would clearly benefit or not be victimized by a fan base and media types searching for a GOAT in their time. For all who have heaped praise upon Mr. Manning as the GOAT.....he is clearly not that, not even close. Truth be told, the records that he now owns would be out of sight had others benefitted from the same rule changes that he now plays under, thus giving us all the opportunity to put into perspective that this player is not among the GOAT, but merely average.

Let's be totally honest. If you're a Manning lover or a Bronco fan, you'll defend his performance to the death. If you're a Manning hater, Bronco hater or a hard core fan of any other team, you'll heckle Bronco fans until your last breath.

I hate the term choke, but some folks equate losing anything to choking so they'll never be convinced otherwise.

Super Bowl XLVIII was the Seattle Seahawks applying defensive pressure on Peyton Manning to the point that he could not make a football play of significance. This is a QB that surpassed 400 yards passing on a number of occasions and exceeded 4 TDs on a regular basis.

Yesterday, Peyton Manning completed 34 passes for 280 yards and 1 TD. He completed a 2 point PAT. The problem was that his yards per completion was 8.2 yards. The running backs could run through the Seattle defense and the play action wasn't even a consideration. The Seattle secondary played stellar coverage and didn't allow the Bronco receivers to get open. Did Peyton choke? NO.
Peyton Manning was required to make adjustments and he couldn't think on his feet under pressure. He reverted to the Peyton Manning that lies under all of this past season's rampage to 55 TDs and 5500 yards passing, which is the Peyton Manning who cannot adjust to pressure and the change that pressure brings. The Bronco offense shit the bed and had to lie in it.

The Bronco defense hasn't received much of the blame for the game either. They certainly didn't do much to stop the passing of Russell Wilson. He only had 208 yards passing but his passes were lasers and they were dead nut on target. He had 2 TDs. For a defense that going to shut down the running game, they actally did a pretty good job at the beginning of the game, but by the half, they looked totally disorganized. Seattle's offense that good? Bronco defense that bad?? Depends on which side of the fence you sit.

On a final note......Peyton Manning says that he'll play again next year if his doctor says he's ok in March. I think 2014 was Peyton Manning's swan song. He had the team that he wanted. He had a GM that did everything possible to construct what he thought was a Super Bowl winner He had a coach that him run the offense that he wanted without interference. I think he'll retire.

....................................the Broncos will not be back in the AFC Championship Game next year.....................

Good points, all, however, I also believe that it's time for Manning to retire, his best days were in Indy, he'll be 38 and the little zip in his passes will be all the more lacking. BTW, there are still a number of folks who still believe that he is the GOAT, another year and the truth will come out.

I agree. The seahawks came to play, all of them. They didn't make any mistakes and just looked to have a bit more in every phase of the game. I wouldn't say this game was an indictment on the career of Manning.

The Manning's are funny. One brother gets more praise and recognition than a qb of his talent should, and the other has hoardes just waiting to pounce on every less than perfect outcome to "prove" how undesreving of praise he is.

Wow............I just gave a thumbs up to a Packer fan.
Not sure if I ever agreed with one.........

Would it make the Manning lovers feel better if instead of calling it "choking" we just say he played like dog shit in the biggest game of the year when the pressure was on?

THIS. I don't know how we're even discussing this. He couldn't win in college......and for the most part, he can't win in the pros, DESPITE being favored every time. He is by DEFINITION a choker. It is what it is.

couldn't win in college ? cant win in the pro's ? such silly pointless internet bravado of hollow nothingness

In Mannings 23 career playoff games his teams have been favored to win 16 times. They are 11-12. For all the " Peyton hasnt had the talent around him" talk the REALITY is that his teams have been favored in 70% of their playoff games and havent even won 50%. Thats choking by SOMEONE and in the NFL that someone is the QB.

This doesn't really make an argument for choking w/o looking at his performance in each loss and the game in general...ex. this game...PM played badly for a half...okay for the other, but he wasn't the reason in total that DEN got beat.

What it does make an argument for or against imo is PM is not the GOAT...he's had too many big games that his team came up on the short end of the score. Favored or not just adds a nugget.

if this happened to Brady would you say the same thing?

Yes. For christ sake, they lost by 35 points. He had to throw the ball 49 times against the world's best defense, and still completed 70%.

Now, I'm not saying he had a great game - he didn't. But some perspective. Peyton didn't cost his team 35 points.

Btw, not sure why you asked that. I'm a Chargers fan (not Denver or Pats).??

Feeling pressure when it isn't there is lack of poise.

On the pick 6 I know his arm was hit. I knew the second he started to step into the throw that it would be, and he should have too. It was obvious.

On the 1st pick...I would agree...they were closing on him, but he forced that ball...I think #88 was open behind the intended WR, but I guess he didn't see him.

On the 2nd pick maybe you did...I don't know that to be true...the ball fluttered badly and made it an easy play as his momentum was carrying him towards the ball...imo I thought Moreno had time to try to break it up but never gained sight of the ball I assume.

I didn't read the entire thread. Did anyone mention Peyton's 11-12 playoff record? Maybe Elway should see what Tee Martin's doing now.

The 1st pick was on Manning...the rest was all SEA DEF...I don't think even Aaron Rodgers could've won that game.

Manning is average when it's on the line, bottom line. His record speaks for itself.

And I didn't think a Bears fan would have the ability to recognize genius :)

I wonder if this winter being so cold is just coincidence?

ah crap... when i posted that I was looking at someone else's avator... But to answer your question (other that I got you mixed up) when people try to use the "excuse" for Brady they get lambasted and laughed at and said stop making excuses... yet they can for Manning

Personally, I think the word choked is overused in all pro sports these days. Also, pining wins and loses on any single player in a team sport is pretty absurd if you ask me. It's rare that a loss ever falls on the shoulders of player.

The entire premise of this thread is a fucking joke. FACT: Manning is a below .500 playoff QB. FACT: In his 3 SB's he has ranged from slightly below average to fucking terrible. The guy doesnt win when it matters. He just doesnt. He is 38 years old and it has been the same shit since his first playoff appearance to his last. He just led the GREATEST OFFENSE EVER to 8 fucking points in the Super Bowl. 8. 8 points. Its a joke. Saying Peyton Manning is the best QB of all time is like saying the 90s/2000s Braves were the most dominating baseball dynasty ever. Sure they are both great in the regular season but more times than not they piss it down their leg when it matters. Sure titles are won by teams BUT the true greats elevate their teams to those titles with their play. Thats what being great means. Its nice he threw 55 TD's this year and its great Denvers O was historically the best ever. When it counted Manning threw as many TD's to Seattle as he did his own team and his team scored 8 points. 8. 1 less point than the Seattle D scored and half as many as the Seattle D and ST's scored. The Seahawk offense literally didnt have to score a fucking point and Denver still would have gotten doubled up. Embarrassing.

LOL, its funny how for whatever reason many football fans only pay attention to one player on the field - the QB. I mean what are those other guys out there for… to look pretty- cause they sure aren't doing a very good job.
