And the plot thickens:

"Sources said both Cora and Beltrán played a key role in devising the sign-stealing system."

Makes sense why Yankees couldn't win in Houston in the 2017 ALCS
It seems that one of the Yankees executives is taking it personally and is now vowing never to trade with them until there is an ownership change. They may even forfeit all their games there. This video was caught by TMZ.

There's a long history of using elaborate schemes and technology to steal signs, from 1900 when telegraph lines were found running under the field to 2017 when the Red Sox were caught using Apple watches. At most they'll be fined and/or have draft picks forfeited.

I mean, the way to test it is just pick a random Astros home game from 2017 and listen for banging on offspeed pitches, or whistling or whatever. I picked a game where they were facing Giolito, and I found an obvious example during a Carlos Correa AB:

P1: 2 drumbeats, CB
P2: No beat, FB
P3: No beat, FB
P4: 1 drumbeat, SL
P5: 1 drumbeat, SL
P6: No beat, FB

Correa walks. Next batter, Marwin Gonzalez:

P1: No beat, FB
P2: 3 drumbeats, CH
P3: 1 drumbeat, CH (HA, loser messed it up)
P4: No beat, FB
P5: 2 drumbeats, SL (Wild pitch, runner to second, signs get more complicated)

Marwin ultimately strikes out on an off-speed pitch; guess those are tougher to hit when you don't know they are coming. Awkwardly, the announcers spend the AB raving about his plate discipline.

The beats come immediately after the sign; this clearly video assisted. I can't believe how many people here are saying "who cares" to this. It is straight up, 100%, no-dispute cheating to have a video camera stealing signs. Knowing what pitch is coming is a HUGE advantage. Like, way bigger advantage than taking steroids or greenies or whatever.

And they were doing it all year, during THE YEAR THEY WON THE WORLD SERIES. This is bad.

Picking another date at random from youtube, Aug 19, 2017, OAK at HOU. From the top, Springer:

P1: No beat, FB
P2: No beat, FB
P3: No beat, FB
P4: 1 beat, CH(CT?)
P5: No beat: FB (Single)

Bregman:

P1: No beat, FB
P2: No beat, FB
P3: No beat, FB
P4: No beat, FB
P5: No beat, FB (BB)

Now there is a runner on second, so the system doesn't work. Altuve hits into DP. Now Reddick:

P1: No beat, FB (Groundout)

And so on throughout the game. Beltran in the 2nd:

P1: No beat, FB
P2: 1 beat, CH(CT?)
P3: 2 beats, SL
P4: 2 beats, SL (Strikeout, LOL)

Fisher in the 7th, bullpen in:

P1: 1 beat, Breaking ball
P7: 1 beat, Breaking ball (BB)

Bregman in the 8th:

P3: 1 beat, Breaking ball
P4: 1 beat, Breaking ball (HR)

The initial stages of the investigation already have begun, sources said, with league personnel contacting people from both the Astros and Boston Red Sox organizations Wednesday. The league is attempting to cull tangible evidence from the widespread paranoia of front offices and teams around the game about others cheating and has indicated it will consider levying long suspensions against interviewees who are found to have lied, sources said.

While there is considerable crossover between the 2017 and 2019 Astros teams, multiple witnesses who were not with the 2017 team are expected to be interviewed, sources said.

Reports: MLB to interview Alex Cora, Red Sox staffers amid widening sign-stealing investigation

The Red Sox now find themselves as part of the investigation due to the number of former Astros employees they have on staff. The most notable, of course, is Cora, who served as Houston's bench coach in 2017.

The Athletic reported Wednesday night that Cora and new Mets manager Carlos Beltran, who played on the 2017 Astros, are now considered key figures in the investigation.

"Cora and Beltran played a key role in devising the sign-stealing system the Astros used [in 2017]," Athletic reporters Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich wrote.

Red Sox bullpen coach Craig Bjornson, who was with the Astros in the same capacity in 2017, spoke with MLB on Wednesday, Passan reported.

Report: The Houston Astros Penalty for Stealing Signs Could Be 'Unlike Anything Seen In The Sport's Recent History'

ESPN's Jeff Passan reported Thursday that MLB is trying to unearth evidence teams "used technology to aid hitters." Based on the results of the wide-ranging probe, potential severe penalties could be "unlike anything seen in the sport's recent history," according to Passan.

Astros respond:

“Regarding the story posted by The Athletic earlier today, the Houston Astros organization has begun an investigation in cooperation with Major League Baseball. It would not be appropriate to comment further on this matter at this time.”

How are they going to "investigate" this? .... "we didn't do anything".. "ok, good enough for me"

Not to smart about it if they are using trash cans.

I wonder if they talked with Bill Belichick on how to steal signs.

According to Cody decker, the Astros built a computer program that within 4 pitches could figure out the opposing teams signs. Fucking insane.
