Yea, by the time you mow the hole thing ...one side needs to cut again.

Fortunately, "only" about 4-5 acres is cleared to require mowing and about half of that is still under tree canopies so they don't need it as often.

As far as horror possibilities, we see bear scat all the time and periodically one will wander near the house. The one we recognize is a big 350 lb black bear that has been around here longer than we have.

Also a big coyote pack is sometimes literally right next to us (they have a large range). They aren't really dangerous to grown humans but the howling can be freaky as hell on a late night full moon!

I'm just glad that we don't have the brown (grizzly) bears here. Those big fuckers are scary!

Still going through The Outsider. It's a slow burn and I enjoy that. The writing and direction are really good for a streaming series. King has always been about the characters and the directors seem to get that. Great character building, even in very small scenes. Recommended watch so far.

The scary thing about that is trying to determine if the thing about to eat you is black or brown while you're filling your pants, because you have little time to decide whether to fight or lie down.

All fair enough points of view. You might as well play dead with either of them if they were attacking hard. Good as chance as any. Personally, I would go for the "stuff my arm down their throat and pray it chokes 'em" defense (a long shot).
I have been around black bears all of my life and never had any real issues. Some hiking interactions but it all went well by following procedure, even with cubs around.
I've had 2 times they were in our camp in the middle of the night sniffing around. We just rode out the 10 minutes in our respective clutching our buck knives. They both figured out there was no food (it was hanging over 15 ft in the air) and took off.

I've been in close proximity of grizzlies (Kodak, the largest strain) a few times and their size puts them in a different class. Both will ruin you if they want but there is no denying the size difference.

Short story long:
Adult male black bears average about 250 lbs in my area (there are larger in someother areas). The Kodiak grizzly bear averages over 700 lbs and the largest on record was 2130 lbs.
However the sheer number of black bears in relatively populated areas dwarves the number of brown bears. So the black bears account for more attacks based solely on that but the black bears are noted to be less aggressive than their larger cousins.

A buddy of mine "recommended" Night of Something Strange (2016), which is apparently about a std that zombifies folks.


He said not to tell anyone he recommended it, and his wife piped in with "You mean that movie you guys were watching when I came home? That was disgusting!"

Any movie with the tagline "Remember to bring your condoms.......and your bazookas" is probably worth a look.

The Creeping Flesh (1973)


So I recently reviewed a Hammer Studios film in which I lamented that it had neither Peter Cushing nor Christopher Lee in it. Ironically this film is not a Hammer movie but had both of them chewing up scenery.

Cushing is an anthropologist who brings home a 10 ft tall humanoid skeleton from the jungles where the locals claim it was part of a long dead race of evil giants. He then finds out that his wife has died after years of institutionalization at the local mental health facility ran by his brother, played by Lee. He then finds that the skeleton grows flesh on it when exposed to water.
The 2 brothers don't get along, and Lee cuts all of Cushing's funding so he (Lee) can win a grant they are competing for.
At the same time Cushing's daughter begains to succumb to the same insanity that affected her mother. Lee admits his niece into his asylum, and also plots to obtain the giant skeleton from Cushing. From there the 2 brothers race to "solve" the mystery both the skeleton and the daughter's illness. But evil has awakened..........

A pretty decent romp that feels earlier than it's 1973 production (I would have guessed it was released closer to the '63 Kiss of a Vampire). It has an engrossing storyline (kind of a Lovecraft feel to it) and is generally well executed. It is a bit clunky in execution and drags a little. Also the portrayal of the daughter's insanity is rather ridiculous at times. But a fun watch that has apparently become a bit of a cult classic. Of course both Cushing and Lee are great!

6 to 6.5 outta 10 range from me. A worthwhile watch for fans of the gothic horror era.

This looks familiar but I don't know if I can confirm whether I've seen it or not... Will have to watch it to be sure. If it has both Cushing & Lee then it will be an easy watch!

I see a familiar Hammer name in Freddie Francis as the director... He directed a couple of Hammer's monster films (1 Frankenstein film that I know of, and I think he did a Dracula film?). Yep I'm going to watch this asap.

It was actually pretty entertaining. You have to be in a Roger Corman-esque mood to watch.

Pretty easy to figure out who the killer was, but I enjoyed it.

Sidenote: No Boobs, but a pretty blonde stripping down to her undies and getting soaking wet.

I am lucky enough to live on 20 acres in the massive growth of the rain forest area of Washington with my Dad at the moment.

When Dad got ill and Mom passed in recent years the maintenance wasn't done. It took me 2 years to get it back under control.

Black Bears are relatively harmless on their own... More scavenger than predator. They literally spend most of their days in some communities (e.g South Lake Tahoe) with people all around them. Most "encounters" involve being pests in your backyard. Torn down fences (bastards) & mauling trashcans. Their primary food sources are berries, insects & roots/plants depending on the season. Which is why people regard them as scavengers. But they do eat meat & fish if the opportunity presents itself.

I've harvested a few Blacks during spring hunts (if you want a spine-chilling experience then lookup a skinned bear - its creepy). Sometimes they can be tough to track down in the wild & remote regions because of their superior senses. But near cities they tend to act more like park geese than a wild animal. I've had more encounters with them in the fall deer hunts than I did with them in the spring bear hunts lol. They are notorious for bluff charging, where they act aggressive but its just to run you off. The worst thing you can do is high tail it & run, because that will kick in their predatory instinct. Much like encountering cougars, standing tall & yelling is the best thing to do. Back away calmly and dont ever turn your back to the animal. Hands down I'd much rather run into a black bear than a cougar or wolf in the wild.

But a mama & a cub? Doesn't matter the color of fur or species, it's guaranteed to be 100% more aggressive.


Grizzlies & Browns are scary as f*ck though... They don't want anything within a square mile of their cubs & they will hunt your ass down if they pick up your scent.

Ok.... so I have watched a lot and commented on none of it, so I won't spend too much time on any of them and will actually probably only list like 4 or so...

Don't Breathe 2 - A fun movie, but nothing special. Actually now that I think about it, at one point I had the thought of 'the people writing these movies think of the worst things'. The first movie having the girl chained in the basement that he impregnated and now this one with the SPOILER. WITH NO TAGS.... ////////////////// the girls parents wanting to cut her heart out while she's awake for their own selfish survival of a fucking drug business, like what the fuck. So, if you count that as special, that's something lol. Nothing impressive with cinematography, angles, writing, dialogue, the story wasn't great and just ridiculous. 5/10.

Evil Dead (2013) - It has been forever since I watched the first one, but I don't recall it being about a girl and her withdrawal. If that was a modern day liberty, I am fine with that. The use of some of the visuals dating back to the original was a nice touch. A lot of silly frustrating things and character choices and I was recall not particularly caring for the ending, but enjoying how it was shot if that makes sense. 6/10.

Halloween Kills - this is not a good movie, but that scene with Myers coming out of the burning house... that was probably the most badass slasher entry of a scene ever lol, with the music. It was a dumb scene with the firefighters I thought, but it was badass. There is a lot to be desired and I found myself just utterly annoyed with this movie. Tommy going around in EVERY FUCKING SCENE rallying troops, causing mass hysteria in a hospital, etc.. I could have also done without the flashbacks, though they did make it look very 70's, not just with the clothes obviously, but with the picture, the lighting, it was cool though not necessary. I did like a fair amount of the music in the film, the use of those haunting, almost Nolan-like horns are excellent and work well with the theme music and the theme of the movie. The timeline in this movie series is absurd. There is NO WAY that Laurie though I swear they called her Laura a bunch, would be awake, much less be even able to move. A lot of useless scenes meant to rally the audience behind the mob I guess, it was weird. This movie felt very disorganized and all of the characters were overly stupid, it was insulting to see honestly. I liked the artsy way Myers fought/killed? Tommy though, with how the surroundings went all black, I liked that. There were times were Myers didn't feel imposing though and actually looked rather small, idk, maybe it's me. That street scene was fucking dumb though and the last supposed kill right before Myers just stares out of the window.... like how. There are so many people there, fucking how. There is just too much that didn't make sense and that bugs the hell out of me. Oh and some of these actors.... they were terrible. 5/10 and I think I am being generous.


Midnight Mass - Let me start by saying I fucking loved this, but it faded as the show went along. The early use of the glowing eyes and the silhouette in a few scenes was fucking awesome. The building of tension was good. The cinematography and camera use was at times just incredible, but again, I feel that worsened too as it went on. To me, the last 2 or so episodes felt rushed and at a different pace with the first few episodes. The first few episodes were like a slow burn that never felt boring, a fair amount of unnecessary but poetic dialogue (which wasn't unappreciated), but it would always rebound. The last few episodes seemed like they threw so much at you so fast and to be honest... I didn't care for the ending. Part of me was expecting a twist, like what if it ended by somehow confirming that really was the rapture, an angel, or the end of times biblically, I think that would have been very interesting. I'm not sure how it would've worked out, but a fun thought. But and SPOILER NO TAGS ////////////////////////// it just kept on progressing like a stereotypical vampire movie but with strong religious themes. And I took issue with a bunch of the characters as it went along because I swear people got fucking dumber or cliched. Seems like I hated it or something, but I actually recommend it based off of the visuals, use of camera, solid tension. If only the characters made better decisions throughout, this would have been fantastic. 6.5-7/10
