Got a request for anyone that wants to answer...
Give me your top 5 horror TV shows. This can be all-time or just current favorites. Or hell, if you're bored enough give me a top 10 (or however many) to encompass both. Or if you're lazy just give me some good recommendations!
I need to get into more horror TV shows. Seriously lacking in that department. I'm looking for great TV shows with an emphasis on horror.
Shows I have watched:
The Twilight Zone
The X-Files
Tales From the Crypt
Penny Dreadful
American Horror Story (not this newest one yet)
The Walking Dead
Stranger Things
Supernatural (didn't watch the last 3-4 seasons, because honestly I'm not sure why I made it that far... Tailored to teenaged girls lol. First couple seasons were better for horror, but now its just a sci-fantasy drama).
Ash vs Evil Dead
My wife & I just finished Black Summer, and honestly I thought it was garbage. She liked it. Not a bad story, just not a fan of the characters or acting at all. And the Tarantino-esque production gets tiresome quickly.
Still need to get into NOS4A2. Also heard good things about Hannibal & Bates Motel. Haven't taken the plunge yet.
I used to despise subtitled movies because I wanted to watch the movie more than read the damn screen. But now I'm ok with it so long as the movie isn't dialogue-heavy.Yeah I am one of those people that watches everything on subtitles. Literally the ONLY thing I don't watch with subtitles is live programming and that is only because of the huge delay and black boxes around the letters/words.
Just use the Hoop search function with the checkbox for "Search this thread only" selected and search for Netflix. I've provided quite a few reviews & lists of recommendations for Netflix movies. All of which you most likely have already seen, but maybe not! This is definitely a forum here I need to frequent more often. My list of horror movies I haven’t seen on Amazon or Netflix is short. About all I have left are C movies and the like. Definitely looking for recommendations I can search on both to watch.
I gotta get my ass to the theater to see Haunt (2019). Don't really care if it disappoints, I'm just a fan of anything Eli Roth, and its October! Prime time for horror films. Only thing that scares me is when they put "produced by"... IIRC the new Cabin Fever was "produced by" Roth, and that movie was awful and didn't have many Roth traits to it. But it was entertaining in a sad sort of way lol.i'm glad you both appreciated my candor. again, i've been drinking for a few hours. you two have been the staple of this thread i only joined here a few years ago, but the horror genre gets overlooked so often.
that said, yes, i will call out shit for being shit. with that said i'll give my october rundown (and maybe a day or two prior to)
Nadja - 1994: said it was presented by David Lynch, which made sense from the standpoint it was horrible and made no sense (but it was shot in black and white, so you know it was classy, or that the filmmakers had now money and this was the best they could do.
Haunt - one of you cats asked about it, put it on my radar, it was what you would have expected out of it. maybe less. this was made by the cats that wrote a quiet place, so you would expect it to be a bit better, but it flows down the same river of the dozens of horror movies set in a "haunt" / escape room, etc...
Calvaire - The Ordeal - Gets a bit weird if that's your thing.
meh, just a junk of trash after that.
Yea after Gibson they tried really hard to fill that void and things felt more forced. I agree that the good episodes were few & far between. To me, Criminal Minds started going downhill when Thomas Gibson got fired. There were still some good episodes but they were becoming more sporadic in my opinion.
Clown (2014) is a gem of a movie.i took the day off and have been drinking for a few hours, so i might be a bit more loquacious than usual, though i don't think i ever hold back in this thread, it's just i've probably watched like a dozen movies, but don't feel there worthy of anyone's attention.
I did watch Haunt, that someone brought up a few days ago, wouldn't have been aware of it if they didn't bring it up. that said, it was the same as any of a half dozen movies i watched in the past year. yes, this was written and directed from the writers of a quiet place, so it gains some cache there. but hell, i don't know what platform it was on (okay, I searched and it's SportsHoopla, which you can watch 5 movies a month on if you have a cool library) and I watched Clown (the day before October) and it wasn't the interesting Clown movie from 2014, which was pretty fucked up, this just devolved into a half a dozen other movies i watched in the past year that just ends up with a group of teenish people in a haunted house or similar going through the motions.

Oh good call on Dexter. I've watched that series through probably 3 times now. Loved it. Very unique perspective on serial killing. Absolutely hated the finale. I get why they did it, but just felt like we deserved better. If they ever rebooted that show I'd be all in.Top 5 Horror TV shows for me :
Tales from the Crypt : solid HBO offering; the movie wasn't half bad either
X-Files : more supernatural, but solid horror elements that made this a favorite
Friday the 13th : an oldie, but a goodie; like Kolchak, one of the first monster/item of the week type storylines; this was a big impact on me growing up in the 80s
Dexter : say what you will about the finale, but for several seasons, this was a great show with horror elements
Walking Dead : still watching this, who doesn't love a good zombie show, but damn, who has been cutting all those lawns throughout the years?????
The Strain : good vampire adaption, decent gore
Fear the Walking Dead : started off pretty good, kind of got boring
Kolchak : a real oldie, but Darren McGaving was excellent as he hunted down monsters; only 1 season, though
Ash vs Evil Dead : I'm a Bruce Campbell stan, so will always watch anything he's in; throw in Lucy Lawless and this was a fun, gore-drenched entertaining ride
Exorcist : I was getting into this, really liked the angles they were taking
Evil : just started watching, so far so good
Outcast : SHO has a weird vibe to it, but an interesting story so far; can be slow at times
Twin Peaks : trippy, weird, maybe not everyone's cup of tea
What We Do in the Shadows : loved the movie, TV show has been pretty good so far
Never watched the other vampire shows : Tru Blood, Vampire Diaries, etc
Never seen Haunting on House Hill or Penny Dreadful
It's fairly obvious that I grew up in the 80s with slasher flicks like Halloween and Friday the 13th movies. I was big into Tom Savini, Stan Winston, Rick Baker, and Rob Bottin for special efx makeup.
As for my favorite horror movie, I offer a few suggestions :
Dead Alive - Didn't know what to expect from this Peter Jackson gorefest (uhm, the LOTR dude), but let's just say I'm a sucker for kung-fu fighting priests and gore
The Hidden - yup, another 80s classic, this one still resonates with me; solid sci-fi horror elements
The Thing - fantastic 80s remake, legendary special efx, and a great sense of dread and isolation, not to mention the pulsating score that emanates impending doom
And I concur that Trilogy of Terror is a must see, if only for the fetish doll.
I did watch the Korean movie Train to Buson, which was pretty great. I think it would have been basically as good even without subtitles. I guess this would be a good recommendation for a horror movie that many probably haven't seen.I used to despise subtitled movies because I wanted to watch the movie more than read the damn screen. But now I'm ok with it so long as the movie isn't dialogue-heavy.
We have our own Hoop Cult following with Train To Busan in here... Can't remember who brought it to all of our attention first (jakedog maybe?), but yea that movie is gold!I did watch the Korean movie Train to Buson, which was pretty great. “We’ve all grown up with 30-minute situation comedies, the sitcom; this is a sit-thriller. With television, you can have a different trajectory of movement [than a movie]; because you’re going for 30 minutes, you gobble them up. There’s no fat on the bone.”
There is a stacked cast in Servant. Toby Kebbell (Kong: Skull Island) and Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under) play a couple who bring a life-like creepy baby doll into their home in an attempt to cope with the tragedy of losing their child. Nell Tyger Free (Game of Thrones), plays the nanny the couple hires to care for their “child”. Rupert Grint (Harry Potter series) plays Julian, the younger brother of Ambrose’s character, Dorothy.
Shyamalan has also teamed with writer and executive producer Tony Basgallop (What Remains). If you want to make sure you don’t miss the series, Apple TV+ will be available to everyone when it launches November 1. Servant premieres on Apple TV+ November 28.
that said, you know you didn't throw that out there as your favorite. i'd be cool to hear what either scares you or you find enjoyable in the horror genre.
Looks like it is being written (David Gordon Green, Danny McBride, etc), directed (DGG) & produced by the same delinquents that made Halloween (2018).... So don't get your hopes up.Please let it be better than the last one!
Remains to be seen. It has good content for the depraved, but if you're looking for good & new material year around... Emphasis on GOOD! Not really worth it.Hmm...perhaps I shouldn't have cancelled my Shudder subscription after all...
