Missed on the Price speculation, but I was just about sure JD was gonna land Hamels. Still not sure I liked giving up as much as he did, but the salary the Philllies assumed and the $ makes it a bit more sensible. Still trying to wrap my brain around it. If the rotation guys do make it back in Holland and Perez and are performing well after the injuries, a rotation of Darvish, Hamels, Hollland, Perez and Lewis/Gonzalez would be pretty good I would think. Then a RH bat and BP help might round this team into something
Don't wear yourself out. We will not really know how this trade worked for both teams for a while. I am just going to be positive about it and hope Hamels gives us a big shot in the arm. Yeah, pun intended.

Pirates Pursuing Joakim Soria Trade

The Pirates and Tigers are nearing a trade that would send Joakim Soria to Pittsburgh, reports MLive.com’s James Schmehl (via Twitter). Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review had recently reported (also via Twitter) that the Bucs had interest in acquiring Soria.

The Pirates have been known to be interested in bullpen help since last week and swung a minor deal to add Joe Blanton to the mix last night, but Soria would represent a much higher-profile addition to the Pittsburgh ‘pen. A free agent at season’s end, the 31-year-old Soria is earning $7MM this season. He began the year as the Tigers’ primary setup option, but Joe Nathan blew out his arm in the early stages of the season, and Soria has seamlessly returned to a ninth-inning role with which he is quite familiar.

It appears Soria will need to hire some movers again, he should have somebody on speed dial

Welcome to the American League Mr. Hamels.

Here are your numbers against the American League over 31 games in your career.

An 8-15 record with an ERA of 4.73 and a WHIP of 1.36. You allow a batting average against of .280 and a slugging percentage against of .495. You have allowed an OPS of .824. Good luck young man.

  • Yovani Gallardo is likely to be dealt, with the Dodgers, Blue Jays and Cubs interested; the Cubs may be looking toward 2016 more than this season.
Not sure I would want to deal with the Cubs again

Saw just now on MLB that Soria is going to the Pirates.

I guess we will just have to wait and see. Jake Thompson at AA has a 4.72 ERA with a BA against of .272 and a WHIP of 1.41 this year. Time will tell how this all works out.

No. I think he ignored them. Sometimes it appears that he seems to think NL pitchers will pitch to the same level, numbers wise, in the AL that they did in the NL.

The splits with Hamels is even more pronounced than usual. A lot more.

At least prospects are going there other this way this time and they have some solid ones; Gleyber Torres (SS) and Willson Contreras (C) would be nice

Everyone said the same about Gallardo, might as well let it play out at this point

I know about a number of their young players but have to admit I do not know much about these two.

But it doesnt fit his rhetoric/agenda about holding on to the "future"...
I just see his posts as cannon fodder right now...easier to just ignore.

Cause its all a bunch of :deadhorse::deadhorse: right now.

Gallardo's numbers the past 3 seasons have been fairly decent against the American League. ERAs of 3.77, 3.46 and 3.38 with WHIPS of 1.23, 1.08 and 1.34. Batting averages against of .237, .227 and .257. He seems to be accustomed to doing fairly well against the American League.

I know he was a big Williams fan, as was I, but his future was limited I think due to his atrocious plate discipline, he improved to a 7% walk rate from 4% and cut his strikeout rate from 31% to 20% but he's going to be fighting that battle as he gets to AAA and the majors, he'll be a fine player, but unless he makes more leaps and bounds in those areas he's limited and will get exposed

I soured on Thompson a tad this year, but I really hate giving up on Alfaro, but hopefully Telis is given some more opportunities going forward, I think his offense is playable at catcher but he's solid at throwing out runners and needs to work on his pitch framing, but he's solid

But everyone said he would implode in the AL and it hasn't happened

I do wonder why they haven't made this trade official yet.

I am not saying you are wrong in your concerns about Hamels but as for me I am glad to take the risk. We are hurting in this area. We can talk all we want about the guys who are on the mend but until I see Darvish, Holland and Perez back in form I have my own concerns there. And I really do not want a rotation where we have 1 or 2 decent starters and the rest are guys who once they get to 2 strikes can't make it happen. We will be spinning our wheels for sure.
