FINALLY! An intelligent post on the situation. You nailed it. It ain't the coaches. It's the program, especially recruiting. You have to have thoroughbreds. We got none.
But it would be beneath some of the UT alumni to hire a former Texas HS coach that has very strong ties to current Texas HS coaches...ala Briles and Morris. That is the biggest reason some of the top talent is now going to Baylor and SMU. People underestimate how tight that fraternity is.

just as a pt of reference, Texas signed the highest rated class in the state last year. Texas is still getting theirs. Sadly, thoe freshmen dominated the list of Horns that actually played well vs ND. Strong killed it in his first true class, it remains to be seen if he can continue that
Ratings for Texas HS players have proven to be no more than a crap shoot.

There are 5-6 boosters who pay Strong's $5M a year salary. Phantom, you had better believe they get to do and say whatever the eff they want.

Mack left a steaming mess with limited talent.
Then Charlie kicked 10% of the remaining talent off the team with his morality purges.

Painful but probably the right thing to do.

Texas is paper thin and young everywhere as a result.
STRONG has had exactly one recruiting class. He inherited Mack's last class when he came in January 14.

STRONG's first class actually gives us a little hope.
I was happy and pleasantly surprised by the freshmen last night.
They made freshman mistakes no doubt, but it was obvious who was playing hard.

Malik might be the best player on the team already and the de facto team captain it seems.
The problem is that there is only so much a true freshmen can do as the team leader.

This actually makes a lot of sense, imo. Any time you have a coaching change, it tends to result in roster changes. Some guys won't buy in to the new coaches philosophy and will transfer, some will basically be "run out of town." It's especially true when you have as big a change in philosophy as there appears to be between Brown and Strong.

Plus, if memory serves, Strong basically came out and said this is what he was going to do when he was hired. If they give him 2-3 more years and it isn't working, it's still Jexas and they will still be able to attract a top flight coach. However, if they fire him in the middle or even at the end of his 2nd season? I think other coaches wouldn't be nearly as interested because any coach is going to want at least 4 years to get his own recruits in and get them coached up.

Quote I saw from high level UT person: The main reason Patterson was fired was "he lost support from the coaches".

Please bring in Oliver Luck.

I'm cool with this but I doubt it happens. He'd be my top choice though, not sure who else I'd short list

Jeff Traylor? Currently on the staff? 4 time state champion at Gilmer HS in Texas? That kind of coach?

I was talking around here all week about just pick about 10 plays, do them to perfection and turn them loose.

That's what Baylor does, I dont even think they have a playbook. I saw the QB interview with Gruden and either Petty or RG111, and that's what they said.

So the news that they were going to reduce the playbook and focus on execution made me very happy.

This = true.

Baylor offense just drills, drills, and drills their plays until they become second nature for the offense. This is why Briles doesn't see much of a dropoff from QB to QB.

It appears Patterson found the line you don't cross with the boosters. Drew it a little too close lol.

So, how many points will Cal score.
What's the spread and the over/under.

Think the teams has been focused this week.

Tom Herman or bust. Should make the back door dealings easier now that Herman is out of the playoffs

was the "report" last weekend
that Red said coach could be fired
a red flag for Herman to start considering the job,
esp now that LSU could come callin?
