I was talking around here all week about just pick about 10 plays, do them to perfection and turn them loose.

That's what Baylor does, I dont even think they have a playbook. I saw the QB interview with Gruden and either Petty or RG111, and that's what they said.

So the news that they were going to reduce the playbook and focus on execution made me very happy.

This actually makes me happy. Not because I don't like Patterson, but because he has ruffled a few feathers that needed to be ruffled. Like all CEO's, you are going to make some good decisions, and some bad. He's probably done the same. He's definitely pissed off some people. What I do like is that the "good Ole boys" club in Austin doesn't have the power they used to have. He is running it like a business. When you donate money, it should come with no special considerations. Period. If you don't like that, then don't donate. I say give Patterson the same time as Strong. Unfortunately the President is part of that "good ole boys" club and will probably get rid of him before he has a chance to affect change. Our luck he'll probably bring Dodds back so he can drive off more Big 12 schools with his greed. Yes, I know there's more to the story and all parties were guilty, but that was a big part of it.

"The Red River Shootout against Oklahoma on Oct. 10 - normally one of the toughest tickets in college football - has roughly 8,000 unsold tickets on the Texas side of the Cotton Bowl."

If Texas losses again their could be 20,000.

The interior youth movement isn't underway like the other positions. It is still mostly Mack's players getting the playing time on the OL and DT positions. One thing that is noticeable, Charlie Strong's guys are rated lower by the recruiting services but it seems more Power 5 schools wanted those players overall. One thing is certain, Charlie Strong failed epically at recruiting DT in 2015. Can't place the blame of that on Mack Brown.

What's this I hear about Charlie Strong preventing recruits from coming to Austin this weekend? Some rumour going around about this.

Without a doubt 2015 DT recruiting turned into a disaster, especially since none were taken 2 yrs prior. Only 2 in 3 years, that will leave a mark. Mack's guys are dominant on the inside, because that is where it takes time to see the field (generally). Closer to the snap, the longer the development time usually.

"losses"
"their"

And how do you get MORE unsold tickets than are currently unsold no matter what Texas does in the meantime?!?

God, you're dumb.

Phantom, you can't be serious. Donors expect favors. I give a nice chunk to the OU athletic department and I'd better damn well get ticket priority, seating priority, etc. to the sports I support. My wife does the same thing on the academic side and she expects special treatment by being invited to OU functions that show appreciation for people giving their hard earned money to the university. It's part of the game. We give; they reciprocate. We stop giving; they don't do us any favors. The "Good Ole Boys Club" built UT. Don't knock them because if they ever say "fuck it" your favorite school is going to be in sad financial shape.

I'm good with donors getting the red carpet every time they step foot on campus. They've earned that treatment with their generosity. However, that doesn't mean they get to hire and fire coaches and say how the operational money is spent and on what sports. That comes from sources other than donors. Donor money builds facilities and funds scholarships. And that is where their influence should be. There is no one huge sugar daddy at UT. There is a bunch of them and they all want equal access. A line has to be drawn somewhere. No idea if Patterson drew it in the right place or not.

No, ET, you do get a say in how things are run. Not day-to-day decisions, obviously, but you certainly have a say in the overall way the university is being run if you contribute in a big way. Example: a donor who gives a nice chunk of change every year isn't going to pick the team meal or decide if the team wears their throwback jerseys this week or next week. But that donor (if he gives enough money) will certainly expect his voice to be heard if a coaching change is being contemplated or some other major issue arises. Donors don't get into micro-management but they do influence the general direction of a program.

I don't think having their voice heard is the problem. The problem was multiple donors hand picked a coach to succeed Mack and have thrown a fit since Strong was hired instead.

I mean, Saban was completely the work of his agent and some booster/regents. McCombs had his guy, Gruden. Crazy Joe wanted to keep Mack until he died. etc etc
