An example of free speech being impeded on:

A government official openly stating that he does not want a company bringing its business to his city because of their views and what they support. The citizens of this country are free to follow whichever religion they like, as well as preach and support that religion. The government (mayor of Boston) should not be openly pushing this business away because of this.

An example of freedom in general being shit on:

ObamaCare. Insane tax plans proposed by said jackass.

Nobody has impeded the Cathy family as of yet from exhibiting free speech on two levels - stating their views on an issue and spending their money how they choose (another form of speech). And while several mayors have come out against these restaurants (more free speech), I'm unaware of any decisions that have been actually made regarding blocking a Chick-Fil-A restaurant from opening. That would be a zoning issue, and none of those cities have actually blocked anything. If they did, I imagine we'd see a court case and I'd imagine the restaurant would win, in which case zero change to our "freedoms" would have taken place.

Freedom from taxation is not in the Bill of Rights. In fact, taxation is a power specifically granted to the federal government by the Constitution. It has nothing to do with freedom whatsoever. It is a policy decision. But tax rates have been very low for years. From the 1930s to the 1985, the highest tax rate fluctuated between 50% and 90%. It is presently at 35% and we have a lower tax burden than most industrialized countries.

Dan Savage says it best in my opinion.

Tell me more about the poor plight of the Christians please. And I don't understand how people don't see the writing on the wall. You know how it seems crazy that interracial marriage was a thing? Yeah, it's happening. Time to get on the correct side of history before everyone thinks you're a nutjob (and if they don't already, the grandkids certainly will).

Yes, they are not forcing the issue, but they are being verbal... This is not a case of citizens standing up to try and prevent Chick-Fil-A from entereing the city, this is a government official. A government official should not be taking that position.

I couldn't care less about other countries. I care about the one I was born and lived my whole life in. Yes, taxes are a power given to the government, a power that is getting out of hand. I have no problem paying taxes on my income (even though I favor Fair Tax above all), but when taxes are being raised on me (and/or my children in the future) gifting money or my estate to my kin, that's a problem. Taxing already taxed items and raising said taxes is just out of control.

Though I now don't care about gays being wed, there is a vast difference between interracial marriage and homosexual marriage.

Both anti movements rooted in "think of the children" rhetoric while motivated by hate and fear. They're not the exact same, but history will look back at both movements as examples of backwards, small-minded, and fucking crazy.

I have adopted the mindset now that you can't change the direction the world is taking. I am not "against" either situation. I do believe very much in preserving culture of ethnicities, and I believe interracial mixing destroys that, but I am not anti-interracial mixing. I feel the same with gays being married in the sense that it is a "cut off" so to speak of the human race by not procreating. Again, I am anti-neither.

I love how Tim Thomas threads always turn into a wide array of social topics and debates.

First off, it is the case of citizens taking action. The boycott and social outcry happened before a few mayors said anything. And those mayors are within their rights to state their opinion. The courts are there to protect us if they take actual action.

I couldn't care less about other countries. I care about the one I was born and lived my whole life in.

I didn't say you should care about them, it's a point of comparison. "Taxes are out of control" is hard to understand when our tax burden is lower than other nations similar to our own. Using other nations is a way to gauge ourselves. What we learn is our tax burden is pretty low. Saying what you just did sounds ignorant, and Americans are woefully ignorant of international politics. You do care about other countries. Because your shoes were probably made in China, and your video game unit was made in Japan, and the economy in Greece, Spain, and Saudi Arabia has an impact on you.

Again, these things are rhetoric you like to use rather than understanding balancing things as a policy decision. I personally don't think there should be any estate tax b/c presumably taxes have already been paid on that income earned. But changing their rate has nothing to do with an imposition on freedoms. It's restructuring the tax plan (something every President does) in some way to accommodate our budget. And it's pretty small in comparison to things like income tax and corporate tax.

I reiterate that your way of thinking - casting things in grand illusions of some conspiracy to fundamentally alter the foundations of our country and destroy freedom - is a MASSIVE part of the problem.

I thought you were American and didn't care about other countries, so why do you care about preserving other cultures?

Wow.

Great explanation. I'm NOT part of the problem. I'm educated and not a sheep. I actually agree with you on the Estate Tax. But next time I see a guy with an Obama sign that has a Hitler mustache (like I saw from some libertarian at the DMV months ago), I'll think of you and how great fearful, uneducated, exaggerating people are for this country.

Wow.

Way to take my words out of context. Referring to other countries tax policies is what I was referring to. It is pretty evident through my whole existence on SportsHoopla that I care about heritage and culture. When referring to how I think taxes should be structured and you battle it with some other country, I don't give a fuck, I care about this country, the one I pay taxes into.

I've only been involved in two elections thus far. 2004 and 2008. I have not really been given the best people to choose in my short stint as a registered voter. I voted for Bush in 2004 and McCain in 2008. However I wanted Ron Paul in 2008. My personal favorite president from my adulthood? I liked both Clinton and Bush. Both had their faults, but both were better than Obama IMO.

Obviously, I currently favor Ron Paul. I also like Gary Johnson as well. I completely hate Romney and Obama.

For the most part I loathe Texas and New England when it comes to politics. They are both extremist areas when it comes to politics.
