Healy vs Seager

Healy or Seager @ 3rd

  • Seager cause he's a gold glover and I don't care about his hitting

  • Healy cause his bat is better and they score tons of runs not to effect his errors!

Sooner or later someone was going to bring this up so I thought what the hell!
At first I was just going to ask the question, then I thought what the hell lets do a poll!

All right here's the question :

Healy is trying very hard to fill in while Seager is out, and yes he has committed a "few errors"
but if you had the choice right now and Seager was back but not hitting like Healy is do you play it safe and go for defense or do you play Healy for his offense?

You put Healy back at 1st and Seager at 3rd. A few errors is a big understatement. Healy has already cost the team 4 runs I can pull off the top of my head defensively and Seager is a GG 3rd baseman. Healy is also a better defensive 1B than Jay Bruce. There's still weeks to go before Seager comes back so this won't happen for a while, and by then I'm sure some of the offense will come back down to Earth and it won't feel like you can't pull Healy or Bruce out of the lineup for a day.

True, Healy has had a shit load of errors at third. My guess is he will move into 3rd and do a decent job if Servais just plays him there on a somewhat regular basis. His bat has been pretty solid so far. If he settles down at 3rd, I would rather have him than Seager if Bruce gets it turned around @ 1st. Time will tell how things come together or not. :noidea:

Here is the point I left out:

Seager never starts out a season hot, I mean it's usually June by the time he finally starts hitting,
and no I'm not saying Healy is the next Edgar, god knows he'll go cold at some point.
But I think it's interesting that this has kinda of worked out this way.

Don't get me wrong I wanted to see Seager come out strong to start the season and try to raise his value back up to where it should be at.

Seager is on the 60 day DL, but here are a few thoughts about this either way:

Healy will be moved back to 1B once Seager gets healthy, I have absolutely no doubt about this. Here are some reasons why in no order:

1. Seager is making $19.5m this year, next year and $18.5m in 2021. Healy is making almost $600k this year.

2. Healy has positional versatility and if his bat if continues to hit well, he will simply be moved to first. There is absolutely no scenario in which the Mariners will bench Seager considering how much he is being paid and the Mariners are better off in every possible aspect with Seager at 3rd and Healy at 1st.

3. Although he is off to a hot start, Healy has always been a streaky player. When you compare the offensive stats between Seager and Healy from 2017-2018, there isn't much of a difference:

Ryon Healy: 282 games, 44 2B, 49 HR, .254/.291/.433 1.4 oWAR
Kyle Seager: 309 games, 69 2B, 49 HR, .235/.298/.425 4.1 oWAR

I anticipate that by the time Seager is back, Healy will be moved to 1B and Seager will be back at 3B. That clogs up a lot of ABs at DH with Bruce/Encarnacion and Vogelbach, but hopefully someone will have been moved by then.

This is a fantastic write up: but do you by chance have a conclusion in a short sentence?

I like to ramble on:

TLDR:

Seager makes a fuck ton of money and will be making a fuck ton of money through 2021, the difference between the two offensively isn't much and overall the team is better with Healy at 1B, Seager at 3B.

I think my concern with Seager was how poorly he was heating last season I don't want to someone who is coming off of injury who batted .220 last season that couldn't over come the shift be plugged in the lineup and ruining the chemistry and I wouldn't want to push Jay Bruce out of the lineup while he is still showing power along with Edwin Encarnacion at DH.

At the same time even with the strategy of taking Healy out in the later innings and putting in Dylan Moore he looked awful against the red soxs.

This really isn't a concern right now because Seager is on the 60 day DL and that's assuming he is healthy to come back. We will see by June who in our lineup will hit the wall and should be taken out

Any time I can vote for bacon, count me in!

In all seriousness, I can't really blame Healy since it's not his normal position... I give him props for stepping up to attempt to fill the hole left by Seager... He didn't really have much time to prepare... It is getting ugly though, so they'll have to figure out a new option...

Healy had a nice few games but he is what he is. As much as Seagar frustrates me he is much better option at 3rd base. Despite Healy's string of extra base hits to start the year he was still 0 Fwar heading into yesterdays game. He just simply hasnt shown a ton since he's been here other then the ability to have a hot bat for like a week
