I'm really not sure what to think here. Umberger is worse than Hartnell with nearly identical cap hits for a few years less.

I wonder if this part of another move. Is Umberger a piece to go somewhere else?

I can't even think that this is the start of dominos. We aren't gaining cap out of this.

Umberger is a little better on his skates and faster. Neither one will win awards in first step speed. Both are good along the boards with the edge to Umberger for...being better on his skates. Really, this is a trade of a 4th round pick in next years draft for a $175k savings on the cap for the Flyers for two (i think) years and then the one year that Hartnell is still under contract and Umberger is not.

Both class acts. Both bring a lot of intangibles....I call it a wash with the possibility that they both have a good season this year just because of the change in scenery.

This is more then just a bit of a shock since I was expecting RJ to get bought out and then re-signed on the cheap. I guess maybe Harsty got tired of Philly since he had to waive his NMC, I wonder if he quietly asked for a trade.

From a hockey standpoint I can kind of see why this trade was made. RJ is a quicker, better skater and way more disciplined then Hartnell, he gets to the same dirty areas and possibly most important, his contract is shorter (2 years) but the cap savings aren't really there. Hartnell is also starting to decline a bit and his already questionable skating and speed have gotten to the point where he can't keep up with G and Jake (but they're both pretty quick so that really isn't a knock on him). I can't imagine that they want to slot him in on the top line but I can see him being a good 2nd or 3rd liner since he's pretty good defensively.

I'm thinking this may be the first of a series of moves now that Hextall is the new GM because that would make this move make more sense IMO. I hope his time out west with the Kings has given him a clear view of what a winning franchise needs to look like and that he's been given the go ahead to do his job without interference.

I'm guessing that RJ will slot on the 2nd line with Schenn and Wayne...Vinny should be the next move...

The contract sucks.. I was hoping this was a move to make more cap space available for a target FA or a trade in the making. As of now, I'm scratching my head at the thought process of Hexy? He apparently knows what he's doing. At least one NMC is off the books.

With Hartnell gone they may really be getting Phaneuf. Those 2 hated each other.

I would've been okay signing Phaneuf as a free agent but trading for him would be disastrous. I don't even want to think of that possibility

Vinny for Phaneuf and a 2nd in 2015 due to his contract? or Vinny and something for one of Nashville's defense man?

They'd have to move another defense man on the roster though.

I don't know I'm just pointing it out as I find the timing of this with all the rumors is pretty odd.

I think we should be happy just to dump Vinny without retaining salary. Phaneuf makes a ton and has his problems, but he is still a good defenseman. I'm sure it'd take Schenn or Couturier

Maybe it's time for the Bobby Ryan rumors to start up again? I'm still hoping to see him in orange and black soon.
