From Bill Meltzer:

"In terms of his own moves to date, Hextall really no choice but to staunchly defend the Scott Hartnell for R.J. Umberger trade, saying he'd do it again now even with the 20/20 hindsight of knowing that Umberger had a poor year and a variety of physical issues. He said one year is not enough by which to draw conclusions on whether the trade helped or hurt the team in the big picture, in his opinion."

Agree with this. There's still time for this trade to be looked at as a winner...or a loser.

The failure with this trade was that Umberger had a hip issue that we thought he could play through, but apparently he could not. So, hopefully that is a non-issue for next season and we can move forward.

I think it's weird that this trade keeps getting revisited. It was 100% because Umberger's contract is shorter. On ice didn't even play in to it IMO. Hextall wanted to get rid of a terrible contract, and the only way he could was to take a slightly less bad contract (shorter) for a significantly worse player.

IMO, that's the whole story.

Agreed, people are still making a big deal out of it - people need to move on
