You definitely can. I know James Gunn wanted to give Rocket his own movie but it really added to this movie’s strength to flesh it out here.

The first movie of any series always has the novelty working in its favor, so the sequels need to work harder to compete IMO.

I thought it was a little bland, tbh. It's worth seeing but the action isn't particularly great, it's not a particularly good date movie and visually it's not very memorable outside of the Rocket stuff. The Rocket plot line is good, though.
