On that topic I do think all of us do a pretty good job with keep language semi-clean on this particular board. With that said, we can't do but so much. Heck, we have a hot chicks forum. You can't deprive 757 his bubble butt pics.

On now back to VT football....

Dyrell Roberts said on FB that he wont be doing kick return next year, its not final tho.....most likely punt return....will practice in spring fielding PR, and if he likes it, will continue

I don't really care what he does as long as he stays healthy enough to contribute.

That may be for the best long-term.... DR was deceptively fast and had great vision (probably due to his running back days).

But we have more than a few burners on the roster now. Jarrett is a possibility too.

Well, HokiesHoopla just tweeted this morning that DPM has moved to that spot. I would guess it will be Martin on running plays, and Malleck or Redman (probably Redman IMO) on passing plays.

(shameless plug, I know ;))

Just for fun, I did a five-year NCAA stats ranking analysis. The first number in each category represents Tech's average rank over five years, and the second number is our ranking in 2011. Numbers in blue indicate where we beat the average, numbers in red indicate where we were below average:

Rushing Offense: 35 / 28
Passing Offense: 86 / 66
Passing Efficiency: 45 / 44
Total Offense: 65 / 35
Scoring Offense: 48 / 57

Rushing Defense: 26 / 14
Pass Defense: 24 / 31
Pass Efficiency Defense: 13 / 14
Total Defense: 14 / 10
Scoring Defense: 9 / 7

During this same period of time it would be interesting to see:

Red Zone Scoring Opportunities vs Actual Redzone Results (TDs only)

Red Zone TDs Defended vs Actual TDs Given

2007: 42-46 = 91% / 28-46 = 61%

TECH RED ZONE DEFENSE:
-------------------------
Red Zone Scores Given Up / Red Zone TDs Given Up

2011: 28-40 = 70% / 21-40 = 53%

That is not good. We got to the RZ more this year but struggled badly.

Wow good stuff here TAE. I knew last year was a little tough for us with regard to our redzone offense, but that is pretty telling evidence there. Also had no clue our D was that stingy in 2009 with regard to allowing TDs once opponents were in the redzone. Thank you for taking the time to get that out there for us sir. :D

The stats for 2011 tell the same basic story. We moved the ball pretty well (ranked #35 by the NCAA), but once we got into the Red Zone we got into a lot of trouble. We failed to score any points at all 26% of the time in the Red Zone in 2011, and we scored TDs on only half of those 70 trips. Obviously, that's going to have to be an area of focus/improvement during the off-season. JMHO, but we're going to have start being a lot more imaginative and a lot less predictable once we hit the Red Zone.

Part of our scoring problem was the fact that we only made 18 out of 25 FGs this past season compared to an average of 21 out of 25 over the previous 4 seasons. I think that forced us to go for it on 4th down much more than the average....20 times as opposed to 12 times per year over the previous 4 years.

Lots to work on, but we have the tools to make the corrections.

I think that you guys are going to be pleasantly surprised with Darius Redmam in the red zone this year. He is huge and can jump out ofthe gym. With a tall QB and tall TE, that could be deadly good inthe red zone. Add in Marcus Davis and we should have at least one mismatch in there. I don't know how Holmes or Coleman will fare, but one of the wonky things that I thought was average with David Wilson was his nose for the end zone. Holmes scored a ton in HS and is bigger, so it may help as well.
