I never get nervous when Lopez is in the game. Again tonight he came up big and saved the game getting the DP to get out of the inning. He has been aces all the way through his time with the Giants. He deserves more chances at getting right handed batters out. The dude is smart and he is always thinking out there. He has been a great Giant and deserves to get paid in this next contract. This is a important signing in the off season. :10:

I'm not too happy with Lopez pitching against RHB. If there's nobody on base, or maybe a guy at first, and the RHB is sandwiched between two lefties, OK. But while he kills lefties he isn't very good against rhb.

2013 RHB : .270 /.349 /.378 /.727
2012 RHB : .417 /.500 /.479 /.979
2011 RHB : .276 /.393 /.367 /.761
2010 RHB : .306 /.361 /.405 /.766

He is also 37.

He is what he is. No need to give him chances outside of that.

After Friday night's "performance", it is pretty clear that Lopez shouldn't be pitching to a series of RHB.

Sorry but I call BS to that.

Lopez has one tough outing and you jump down his throat. Over the last 2 1/2 years Lopez might be the most dependable reliever not only for the Giants but for any team in baseball. You are making a judgement on him when he should of got out of that jam last night if the outfield was not pulled over in the wrong shift. He has never been given a legit shot at facing right handed batters since he has been with the Giants. I have supreme confidence in Lopez and that has not changed. The Giants would be smart to resign him.

Marco said nothing about not resigning him. His comment was about how to SE him.

JLo is a LOOGY. That is how he should be used.

What I was saying was that Lopez has not been given enough of a shot against RH hitters to make a judgement on his ability to get them out. Why not give him a shot here in the last 7 weeks of the season to see if he can get it done?

Because he is 37 and as shown throughout his career that he is elite at one thing, and below average at something else.

Set him up for success by limiting his exposure.

Edit:

WOW! I just looked it up, and it is more pronounced than I thought. He is downright BAD against righties. Yikes.

Just looked it up ??!!?? I posted his last 3 season's stats (and this season's) against RHB in this thread !!!

Um, no. He plain sucks against righties, and has for years. When your *best* (lowest) AVG against righties over the last 3+ seasons is .270 (your BEST) you just shouldn't be facing many righties. Concerning the "never been given a legit shot at facing right handed batters since he has been with the Giants" - *I* call BS on that!

Here are the numbers from last year :

RHB 56 PAs, 8 BB, 0.75 K/BB, .417/.500/.479/.979
LHB 97 PAs, 6 BB, 3.67 K/BB, .191/.240/.303/.543

A tad over 1/3 of PAs pitching against righties, which is *huge* for a LOOGY (which is exactly what he is). He should just not be pitching to many RHB, exactly as I stated in my first post on this thread (with evidence) - well before his "one tough outing".

Looking them up and seeing them compared to his lefty numbers fir each year. The contrast is shocking.

The most surprising thing I saw was that he tends to actually face more righties than lefties each season.

I can see that.

Not really with the Giants, but before ,yeah. With the exception of 2011 (when he faced a few more righties than lefties, but basically an equal number) Bochy has tried to use him more against lefties - which has turned him into the super elite "never met a lefty I couldn't get out" LOOGY that he is now. (Well, except for Chris Davis yesterday ...)

Against LHH yes. Against righties, look at the numbers. He's a LOOGY...maybe the best in baseball, but still a LOOGY.

I seem to recall reading this somewhere recently ... "I'm not too happy with Lopez pitching against RHB. If there's nobody on base, or maybe a guy at first, and the RHB is sandwiched between two lefties, OK. But while he kills lefties he isn't very good against rhb."
