2nd straight 3rd period meltdown... How many 3rd period leads have we blown this season? 7? 10?

what an embarassment. if niemi doesnt stand on his head, the sharks dont stand a chance.

Well Niemi is all we have in net, the sharks have no faith in the Rookies. I think the Stalock injury will hurt whatever plans Doug had for this team.

I say Nittymakii shuts it down for the rest of year, use his LTR for a Dman.

Todd has his head up his ass... "we only needed one clear or one goal"... ummm.... they are playing 2 of the worst teams in the league and they expect to squeeze out wins?

Fuck you todd. You suck.

The more I look at, the more I feel that much of the sharks troubles throughout their history to win when it counts really has come from coaching...

Sutter is a terrible coach as we've seen in calgary. Wilson is terrible as evidenced in toronto. Mclellan is getting his first shot as head coach, and so far he has an embarassing 1st round exit to a #8 seed, WCF appearance only to get blown away 4-0. Now, he's 3/4 of the way through the season and outside of the PO picture.

If only the sharks had an established, good coach to motivate these guys appropriately.

2nd game in a row they probably should have won. But then again teams that get in shooting lanes, and play a real compact game in their own D zone really keep the Sharks off the scoreboard.

Two days ago it was looking like the Sharks would put some decent room between them and the 9 hole, now they might not be in the top 8 next time they take the ice against Nashville.

Geez 1 point out of last place, two out of first in the Pacific. Points are far too valuable right now to be blowing games like this.

I kinda hope Dougie gets fired just so there's an outside chance the Thornton gets traded. Only guy on the ice for all 3 goals against and provided zip on O yet again. What a disaster.

sjrules, I know you're pissed at McClellan, but I think the players need to take most of the heat. They should be naturally motivated from within to want to go all out. I don't think McClellan can change their mindset that much using different tactics. They're adults and are not going to change. The solution is to fully evaluate the team after the season, as we're too far into this season, and get rid of the unmotivated dead weight on the roster. I'm numb right now as to how many games the players have thrown away this year, just like today's game. It almost seems to follow a script.

someone needs to light a fire under Joe's ass....

Instead todd has given him the captaincy, top PP time on the #1 unit, and roughly 20 mins a game.

hmmm.... that makes sense?

Three words:

Thornton-Nichol-Mayers.

Thornton is the captain. Meaning he should be able to light a fire under everyone's ass especially his own. That's one of the roles of a captain. Now I'm not going to pretend that I think Thornton can do that. Joe was a terrible choice for captain. A choice I'm 100% sure was made by Doug. I don't blame McLellan for Joe's play. Scotty Bowman couldn't get shit out of Thornton this year. He's just not interested in playing the type of game he should be playing and that will not change until Thornton chooses otherwise. There's nothing anyone else can do.

I agree to a large extent. No doubt that Jumbo is responsible for his own suckiness. I wont argue that one bit and I never denied it. However, given this, his ice time needs to be limited particularly in 1 goal games with the sharks ahead in the 3rd period. That's the worst time to put out one of your weakest and laziest defensive players (currently 4th worst in the Western conference in +/-). Also, when a guy like him has no points on the power play in 11 games, then you gotta stop wasting so much valuable PP time on him. Wellwood, couture and pavelski have all been far more effective centers in the last several weeks so they should be the ones to play until jumbo's behavior changes.

When a guy is going well, you gotta ride the hot hand and increase his ice time. When a guy is cold as ice (not snake bit, but lazy and not working), then you gotta limit his ice. That's my beef...

agreed (aside from the captaincy... i still think that's the coach's choice). Thus, if thornton sucks, bench his ass or at least limit the damage he can do. That is the coach's ability. When a guy is playing like that, there is no reason he should get more than 15 minutes a night max. I got no problem with his minutes going to wellwood, eager, couture, clowe (but he and logan were under 17 mins when jumbo was 19:30?), pavelski...

The positive side of things is that they're 9-2-1 after the 6-game losing streak. Unfortunately, the last two ugly games will stick out with the typical ways in which the Sharks have lost. The losses are worse because there is no cushion in the playoff race, like in recent years. The players don't seem to understand that, with how they played late in this game. That's just inexcusable.

9-2-1 is good. 9-8-1 is not good. 0 points against the 4th and 6th worst teams in the NHL is really not good. Another 2 blown 3rd period leads is really really not good. having the #1 worst +/- player in the western conference as well as the 4th worst is really really really not good. Being currently out of the PO's is worst.

I see what you're saying. Ideally, that should be the case but I think that player reputation plays significantly in ice time. Guys like Thornton, Marleau, and Heatley are veterans who have put up the numbers, and they will unfortunately get the benefit of the doubt from McClellan. I think McClellan needs to carefully pick his spots when he decides to send a message, otherwise doing that too often will lose its effectiveness. He should've acted more firmly with the Big 3 earlier in the season. It's now down to crunch time, and if he does something that completely loses either of them, it's basically over. The best players need to play like the best players, but Couture has been the best, most consistent player this season. No knock on him because it has been great to see, but the Sharks won't go very far in the PO's (if they even make it) if that continues to be the case.

Garbage loss to a bad team. Oh well.

When you have to depend on Kent Fucking Huskins to score for you to have a shot to win games, you know your team just isn't very good.

Let's see how they respond in this upcoming stretch of 6 games (at NSH, vs. WSH, vs. COL, at DET, at PIT, at CGY) before the long homestand. Things can change in a hurry, good or bad.

Yeah, I mean if a guy has a bad game or two, it's not like you bench him. However, when do you draw the line? Jumbo has stunk most of the year but most of all the last 10-12 games. However, it also doesnt need to be so obvious. Trickling his minutes down works fine. 30-60 seconds less per game each time he stinks. that's one or two shifts fewer and maybe not putting him out there on the #1 PP. It doesnt need to be a blow-off-the-lid rant ala wilson or sutter. however, there is just no reason that he should play about 20 minutes right now when couture gets 16, wellwood gets 15, and eager gets 6. Even pavelski, who has been by far the best sharks the last 10+ games, played just 17:18, over 2 minutes less.

Who do you think was the only forward to have more ice time than jumbo??? Dany Heatley. Now, you're telling me its good coaching to have heater and jumbo have the most ice time of any forwards?

What are you talking about? Huskins is a scoring machine now. He almost had two in the 1st period today. Look for more offensive production in Nashville from the Sharks.

the captain is -2 and completely ineffective again. poor patty, on the wing with pavs he was getting lots of chances and producing, but whoever is placed with jumbo its quickly rendered useless.

Wait a minute. Some time ago I questioned how much of Marleau's +/- and overall ineffectiveness to that point in the season was due to both Thornton and Heatley's style of play and overall poor play and you ripped my shit for it. Are you starting to see the difference now in Marleau's play when he doesn't have to be the primary defensive forward on a line like he is when he's paired with Thornton?

Not saying that it's good coaching nor the right thing to do. Just saying that their reputation, talent, and potential to provide offense must contribute to the ice-time decision-making process, regardless of how the other forwards are doing. It's not fair or just, but it seems that's how things are going to continue. With that part not changing, the players put out on the ice need to find a way to get it done. Hell, it's frustrating and painful to watch. I don't even have as much energy as before to get angry at the team anymore, even with another type of loss like the one today.
