I've watched the Leafs a fair amount his year and, sadly, I've gotta say that Clarkson is leaps and bounds better than he was last year.

He's playing like a third liner who can log some second line minutes when he's hot, which is exactly the player he is.

Of course, a player like that shouldn't be making $5.5 million a year, but given the alternative and the circumstance, I guess I'll take it.

In a perfect world, Celine and Clarkson play just well enough to be attractive as trade bait that the Leafs don't have to eat more than $1.5 million worth of salary to move. I really think this team can take a huge step next season if they a) maintain their recent level of play, and b) shed enough salary that their options stay open while bringing youth into the fold.
