True we need a qb, it just seems like the better talent is in other positions at the top of the draft while qb just doesn't seem worth a first round pick for a bench warmer/development guy
A lot of the top talent seems to be in 3 areas, imo.

1. Defense. Most of the top 15 picks are defensive players unless the combine switches things up. 3-4 secondary players. 1-3 linebackers. 3-5 players on the dline

2. Offensive Tackle. You'll probably see 3 go top 20. Possibly 3 in the top 11.

3. Quarterback. Wentz and Goff are probably better prospects than any non-QB, non OL offensive player. Its a bad WR draft, its a bad TE draft.

My opinion is that the Rams should trade their 2 2nd round picks to get into the 4-6 range and draft a QB. I do think Goff would be a great selling point for the team in LA. Walterfootball says the team would love to draft Wentz. If they get either guys, they can just sign a LB in FA, re-sign Hayes at DE and patchwork a lot of the little issues.

Based on the draft pick value chart (Draft Trade Chart | ProFootballTalk), trading #15, #43, and #45 could potentially move them up to #4. Of course, you need someone willing to trade down. Such a trade would leave the Rams with just a 3rd, 4th, and 6th for a position that they have 3 guys pretty much already locked in for in 2016. They would need to fix that glut somehow (find a taker for Foles basically, or forget about bringing back Keenum).

A glut at the backup QB spot, sure.

Kaepernick had 6.6 yards per attempt to give a line of what awful is considered.

Foles had 6.1 yards per attempt last year. Keenum 6.6 yards per attempt. Sean Mannion couldn't even get playing time.

Carson Palmer had a GSOT type 8.7 yards per attempt. Russell Wilson had 8.3 yards per attempt. Thats the competition.

Trading up means getting a better QB than the Niners. Snead likes to move around in the draft. I think it makes sense. We like to think that trading down is always the best idea and then get shocked when the team drafts a player who doesn't make it. I think if the Rams dont trade up then it opens the door to the Eagles, Niners or Texans to find a way and keep the Rams without a franchise QB prospect moving forward.

I do get the reluctance to trade up, though. The Rams 4 best draft picks in the past 15 years have been when the Rams just had someone fall in their lap in the middle of the first round. This is definitely one of those drafts where someone good will be there at 15. I just think the Rams need at QB is more important than superstition.

Trading all those picks to get one player when we have three major needs? You can't fix stupid! Clayton is spot on here.

I don't think we need to trade up. It is unclear what QB is the clear favorite, depending on what mock you see, Goff, Wentz or Lynch could be picked by anyone. My point is that who is there at 15 draft him, if 2 are there pick who you think is best. We also need a center Voltz or Kelly a WR like Doctson or Thomas or maybe a CB like Apple. All three are possible with the 15th and the 2 second round picks. FA the MLB position and resign some of our defensive backfield.

I may be wrong, but it seems Clayton is advocating trading up for a QB.

Sean Mannion couldn't even get playing time.

I wouldn't go that far. As the #3, he wasn't getting any reps and wasn't ready to be thrown into the fire. Hopefully he gets the necessary reps in the preseason.

First, Mannion has to add a little weight and muscle to withstand the rigors of the NFL season and to improve his arm strength a tad. Next, he has to learn to read defenses and make snap decisions on the fly. I think we will see a vastly improved Mannion come training camp.

Nice draft chy, unfortunately were still 7-9 without a QB. I liked all your picks but the Rams 3 QBs will just get Gurley killed and our first year back in LA a sub 500 record.

I know some think the QB class is weak but how long do we stay pat with overrated clip board carriers? If Mannion is the real deal fine but I didn't see or hear anything that says that is so. Can't we just get ride of the Foles of the world? RGIII, Johnny, Peyton, how many others can they mention for the next sub par record season. Let Mannion go forth and prove his worth in the preseason, give Goff, Wentz or Paxton some work and lets turn the page. If the Rams don't go with one of the those three QBs in the draft, we will play for 7-9 again and this time next year have the same conversation. If they are gone before 15 OK then go BPA. Don't give away any picks for any of them just wait until 15 but if the Rams don't figure out the QB position pretty soon, that defense will be on life support and the window will close.

I like this part of your post the most blue!

We started YOUKNOWWHO as a rookie, and Shawn now has a year under his belt.

If we look at the players we drafted at BPA we are winning!

It's those reaches and projects drafting need that have screwed us of late.

With studs to be had in the first two rounds, we should always draft BPA in those rounds and a mix of need and BPA in all others.

Use FA to fill needs, just give short term deals unless it's truly the rare All Pro FA.

My take about the draft and the Rams future is that without a real QB we will flounder again for years at 7-9 or worse.:L That being said, Fisher and Snead have picked the NFL's defensive and offensive rookies of the year in the past two drafts. That is a positive.:suds: So if we want to side with success on their part, Mannion must have value to be the Rams QB of the future.:hope: He will not realize that standing on the sideline behind guys that are not real starters in the NFL. Dump the Foles' of the world and let him go forth and prove them up or down on the pick. That is why I have wanted one of the three QBs in the draft to place him in the spot if Mannion is not the guy. Now that being said SJ is right, defense wins games especially if BPA is a need and that possible 3 in a row talent. We know MLB is a need, CB is a need especially if one of the two walk and DE for Long is close. I believe in the Oline with the exception of Center. So my bottom line is, if Fisher and Snead think Mannion is the future, they have to go BPA with the arrow going defense, if Mannion has any question mark, go QB all day.:2cents:

Bingo! And both of those picks were 'BPA' (Donald & Gurley) unlike our first pick of 2014 when we went 'need', 'project' etc...(Robinson)

I will concede we got a good one with the Rams 2015 2nd round pick (Haventstein) clearly a 'need' pick, but he was the 25th pick of the 2nd round (57th overall).

I'm good with going need late in round 2. It's the first round and top to middle of the 2nd that gems can be plucked by sticking to your guns and going 'BPA'.

Look no further than our 2014 2nd pick. (Joyner) A BPA pick we made in the top of the 2nd round. (9th & 41st Overall) I like it! Had we gone QB in with that pick, we would have been looking at Garoppolo most likely. Instead we took Gilbert in the 6th round.
