And speaking of free Stormlight Archives...

They're releasing new chapters of book 3 every Tuesday from now until the release date on Nov 14th. They are planning on putting the full actual chapters from the book up, and by release day will have given away 1/4 of the book. The prologue and chapters 1-3 are already up as of the time of this post.

can't wait for this one to get released

pretty interesting that it is going straight to paperback. I feel like more authors are doing this.

I think it has to do with ebooks. I imagine that cuts into hardcopy sales a lot, so both formats of hardcopy can just go out at the same time.

looking at articles, it seems like it is something that is becoming more common and allows for publishers to sell the books differently.

Apparently is has been the standard in the UK for a while.

Reading and enjoying Tim Dorsey's books and his two heroes Serge A Storms and Seymore "Coleman" Bunsen.

Whacky story lines like Carl Hiaasen or James W Hall.

It's a business decision. New York Times bestseller list is a big incentive. If only the super fans buy it in hardcover the first couple weeks then only casual fans buy it once it comes out in paperback, you're very unlikely to have enough people all buy it at once to get on NYTBS list. Sanderson himself has answered people before when they ask the best way to show your support and helping an author. He said pre-orders affect how many copies get printed and sent to stores, and it affects how the stores themselves treat it. Whether it just gets put on the shelf in line, or gets an end cap or something or it's whole own display. He gets the most money from hardcover book sales, then ebooks I think, followed by regular paperbacks. But he's said over and over he would rather have you enjoy 10 of his books free in a library than buy 1 hardcover you didn't enjoy, so get the book the way you would enjoy it.

If Martin and/or Rothfuss ever release their next books you can bet it will be hardcover only for a while. Probably the same for these new Harry Pooper books that are supposed to be coming out soon.

I am tempted to treat myself and buy the new Stormlight book. If I take it out from the library, I will not get through it before someone else puts a claim in on it.

Reading the Saxon Stories by Cornwell.

I'm on the 6th book now. I've actually seen some on Netflix. (But don't let that get around)

Words of Radiance: 3.5/5 stars. Definitely not nearly as good as "Way of Kings" (5/5 stars), but still a good fantasy epic. I really disliked the plot line that involved Shallan with Tin. That was just boring. The best part of the book was when Kalladin and Shallan were trapped in the caves. That part was awesome- really further advanced both characters. The ending was nowhere near as good as the ending from the first book though (granted, the ending from the first book is arguably the best ending of a novel I've read).

I tried "It" by Stephen King, I really did. I got 4 hours into it. I really dislike stopping a book after I've started it, but when the book is 44 hours long, it's not good, and "Oathbringer" is released; well, I'm sorry I guess. It's the second book I've started on Audible to not finish- the first one was "The Maltese Falcon." I got half-way through and stopped, coincidentally to read The Way of Kings. Maltese Falcon wasn't even bad, and I only had like 3 hours left, so I'll hopefully finish it someday. If I can finish the 7 hour "The Gunslinger" (0.5/5 stars) and the ~20 hour "Dune" (0.5/5 stars), I should be able to finish that (thus far) mildly enjoyable ~8 hour book.

I downloaded Oathbringer, and am 40 minutes in. Have you guys gotten it yet? I'm pretty sure all of you guys have read the series thus far.

I got my copy of Oathbringer in the mail yesterday. It is a fucking tomb and I will be getting into it soon.

I have been trying to refresh my memory of what the heck is actually going on in the series before reading it.

In the meantime, I read Edgedancer, which is essentially the 2.5 of the Stormlight Archive series. It focuses on Lift and he learning to become a Knight Radiant

I hear ya...In WoR, he was setting up much of the rest of the series and the ending kinda whimpered out. Not so much a cliffhanger as a "get ready for more tedium, everybody!" I'm already confused as hell when I read these novels because there are so many characters and plot lines going on. I am literally reading them twice as I go, because I have to return to previous chapters so often to help clarify something later on.

I haven't gotten Oathbreaker yet, will wait for it to hit the library. I probably should have re-read the first two books prior to this, but I'm such a promiscuous reader that i usually have several other books going at the same time.

Yeah, see...I'm not sure I remember who Lift is, or if he was even introduced in the WoK or WoR...

I really need to re-read the first 2. :L

ditto. I kind of tried to set it up where I didn't have anything going on when Oathbringer came out, but that didn't end up being the case. Now I kind of feel like I want to finish the book I am currently reading before I dive into this massive book.

Sanderson was actually releasing a couple chapters a week for the past few months. So I was already up through chapter 32 before the book even came out. And had it delivered to my tablet and phone (kindle) Tuesday at midnight, so I would normally be done already. But life got busy. I'm on like chapter 44 right now and probably won't finish until Sunday.

Edgedancer was kind of fun. But I know lots of people who don't like Lift. Lift being the one who calls everything awesome. For some reason lots of people seem to want everyone in a fantasy setting to have a British accent and speak like Shakespeare wrote their lines.

Yea I get the whole unhappiness w "awesome" in that book. It's a word I hate in general, but it feels so out of place there.

I have my copy, but I just started the Gentleman Bastards, so I think I will finish those first and then dive into it. I am loving that series
