This is my point though. What could they have possibly filmed that would have garnered an R rating? Not sex, not F bombs, not exploding heads... those things just don't fit Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman as characters. They'd be in there purely for shock effect rather than as a way to enhance the story, and in that case, they deserve to be cut out.
We'll find out, but I'm not putting much faith in BvS being any better as an R rated film compared to the theatrical version.
Just heard the R rating was determined because of "sequences of violence."
So a movie based entirely around the brutal fighting of Batman and Superman, featuring many "sequences of violence" in the tv trailers, is PG-13 because a few "sequences of violence," (not all of them) were removed?

New (2nd) Daredevil season 2 trailer:
And the casting blunders continue...Big announcement about Batman v Superman which will be in theaters in only a couple more weeks.
Entertainment Weekly - If BvS sounds crowded, it actually got smaller as time went on. The PG-13 movie’s 2 hour 31 minute runtime will expand further with an R-rated “Ultimate Edition” on home video, featuring even more brutal fight scenes as well as additional hints at future films. There’ll also be some new characters, including a secret one played by Jena Malone, who was cut from the theatrical release.

This announcement of course has set off a wave of speculation on exactly who Jena's character will be, but Zack Snyder is claiming it it isn't Batgirl or the female version of Robin. There is a lot of chatter in hollywood that some extra on the set leaked a bunch of information out about Jena being in the movie and that she appeared to being groomed as a Robin. And thus they released the information about a R-rated version with her character in it way ahead of schedule as damage control.
I also wonder if this is what we're going to be getting from certain superhero movies going forward. They'll be going PG-13 to maximize theater profits, but later releasing R-rated versions to boost blueray / PPV sales.
