The end of Eli in N.Y.: Time for Giants to move on from Manning

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Four more years, Eli Manning predicted in the summer of 2017. He said he still loved the training, the film work, everything about being a starting NFL quarterback, and he figured he could compete at a high level until age 40.

"So I don't see it slowing down," he told ESPN.com at the time.

Yet now, at 37, it is slowing down to a grinding halt. Manning has devolved into a shadow of his two-time Super Bowl MVP self, and it was clear Thursday night to every fair-minded fan in the house that his time as the New York Giants' franchise player is coming to an end.

Actually, that time has already expired. In professional sports there is no such thing as a franchise player for a 1-5 franchise, or for a team that has lost 18 of 22 games over the past two seasons. As much as it hurts to say it about an athlete who has always carried himself with grace in the world's noisiest market, Manning's exit is no longer a question of when, but how.

Agreed, he needs to go ---- 2 years ago. Giants are a mess. They have 2 more wins on the schedule, they play the Redskins twice.

They keep thinking they can milk Eli a little longer, if they just fix the line. But they can't fix the line, and even if they did, he may be shot. The Giants have spent a ton of draft capital and money on the offensive line in the past five years, and have almost nothing to show for it. Nate Solder looks washed and they paid him huge coin.

Well, I think most people thought they should have drafted one of the young QBs this year.

Now this may be a wasted year and they will have to draft one next year

Painfully obvious that he doesn't have it anymore...and yet they also have absolutely no options on the bench.

I don't know that this coming draft even has any "good" QB's for the pro game. They're looking at three or more years of tanking, and of over-using Saquon Barkley

All right, I'll be the first to say it:

The Giants need to call Kaepernick

Eli is just horrible. He doesn't belong on an NFL field. Barkley is going to be a superstar, but you need to take a QB there when you are trotting out that horrible statue every week.

Their season is pretty much over....maybe they should find out a bit about Kyle Lauletta.

Yeah, the Giants need one of those old-fashioned hooks that you'd see on old bugs bunny cartoons when someone was yanked off the stage. Get Eli outta there ASAP

Points For...28th...ouch!

Points Against...25th...not a whole lot better.

Well, at 1-5 getting torched at home by a DIV foe, it's time to admit this was an awful pick...I really thought the Giants with Barkley and that expensive DEF, and revamped OL was going to challenge for the east.

Regardless of what you think of Eli pro or con...you simply cannot have a 28th ranked OFC with a QB carrying a $20+ mil cap hit...I was for the QB pick only because the opportunity to draft that high and having a QB available doesn't always line up. I was wrong on multiple levels with the Giants....They do appear to be heading towards another top 5 draft pick and yes, it's time to cut ties with Eli.

It’s a shame this qb class is just not even close to as good. Frankly they need to take bpa and worry about qb later. Maybe they get their own jimmy g type deal. Idk.

But this is not the year to reach at qb

the funny thing is he has his highest rating since 2015 and is completing a career high 68.7% of his passes.

just nothing on the ball.

Fact is, while Eli looks like he's at the end of the road, they could've put Aaron Rodgers back there and he would've gotten killed. I was flipping between that game and the college game, but every time I was on it and the Giants were passing, he was getting destroyed by a collapsing pocket. I feel bad for the guy, getting the brunt of this for last night's game when the OL was arguably much worse.

Pretty sad too because he's a solid dude. He doesn't deserve the flack he gets from his own fans.
