And now he'll have the opportunity to lead them there all by himself.

Inquiring on behalf of the Detroit Red Wings organization, what is this "draft lottery" everyone is buzzing about?

maybe Sabres get the better player

"Better Player" is subjective, but whoever they get will certainly have an exponentially better chance at success.

There are a lot of upset NHL executives tonight after seeing the #oilers get another No. 1 pick. Wonder if the system is examined again.

I like the idea of draft position by number of points post elimination.

Especially this season :D

Not just for the end run from the Jackets, but because it would have given Buffalo a reason to beat the Pens that last game and shut them out of the playoffs too...

I havent read the thread ... Whos the trade bait for d help now ? Eberle?

I would like Eberle, but I don't hate any of my defenders enough to send them to Edmonton, nope, not even Jack Johnson. If only Jared Boll played D....

Someone help me get a message to Carl and Bonnie Lindros. I want to introduce them to the McDavids...

Maybe things won't end up being too bad up there. Maybe now Mike Babcock will take the Edmonton job (replaced by Todd McClellan in Detroit) and add some real structure there. They can trade Hall and Yakapov for some defensive help and 3rd/4th line depth, sign Niemi for cheap in goal or pry Bishop out of Tampa, and maybe things won't be too bad next year going forward. Who knows.

"foot in the crease" Cup doesn't help either.
Meh. I've always been thankful for that goal since the rule was dumb to begin with and it led to it being scrapped. Also, Buffalo were not a very good team and I would like to shoot Hasek someday.

Trading Hall would be beyond stupid, signing Niemi would be crazy, and I don't think you could pay Babcock enough for him to work under the morons running things in Edmonton.

Yotes really could have used that #1 pick to being some excitement to the fans. Oh well, at least Columbus will be a force next year!

They only had 2, Malkin went #2 in 2004.
True. But an argument could be made that Ovechkin and Malkin could be considered 1A and 1B. :)

Disagree. Taylor Hall = coach killer. He has been the captain of that rudderless ship. Edmonton needs blue line help. Time for a new scenery for him. He has been rumored to be on the trading block already this year. They could land a pretty could haul for that. We'll see. Coaching the likes of a McDavid could change a coaches opinion of working there. So where would Babcock go? Toronto - lol?

Maybe the issue is that Edmonton's front office is incredibly incompetent and never gave him (or frankly many of their young guys) a shot in hell to succeed? As you mentioned, they need a blue line...and they have since freaking Pronger left, and they haven't really done anything to rectify that. Darnell Nurse is the only high end draftee they've taken on D in the past 8 years or so. Most people who know something about hockey and the Oilers situation in the past decade look and see that they haven't changed leadership at all. When you think in the context of what other contending teams have done recently, that only gets crazier: Pens fired GM 5 seasons after Cup, 1 year after ECF appearance; Bruins fire GM 4 years after Cup, 1 year after SCF appearance; Caps fire GM after missing postseason once, which was preceded by 3 of 4 years winning their division. I mean...these are teams firing GMs because they're simply not getting far enough in the playoffs, meanwhile the Oilers braintrust hasn't seen the playoffs in 9 years. Sorry, I'm rambling now. They're maddening. The incompetence is incredible, and it's merely compounded when you hear their President talking about "knowing how to win"...because winning as a player is the same as winning as a GM/etc. In other words, while I feel bad for Oiler fans (I know many won't agree with that), man I hate seeing their front office rewarded for their awful management.

Yep, smart move here is to trade one of the best young offensive wingers in the league just as you draft a guy who could be the best centre in the league. That's the ticket to success!

Coaching the likes of a McDavid could change a coaches opinion of working there. So where would Babcock go? Toronto - lol?
I've never understood this idea that a coach like Babcock would be lured to Edmonton of all places, home of what currently constitutes the most inept management team in North American professional sports, a roster with more holes than a ten square foot sieve, and the worst winter climate in the league, simply to coach McDavid. The idea that he'd jump at the chance also doesn't hold any precedent- when the Pens drafted Crosby they had Eddie Olczyk at the helm and replaced him with Michel Therrien. Star coach if I've ever seen one! Caps pulled Boudreau out of the A to coach Ovie, Lightning gave Stamkos Rick Tocchet and Trapstar Boucher, and the Isles attracted Scott Gordon to coach Tavares. Those are all guys that were pulled out of the AHL, CHL or were assistants. And that all goes without acknowledging that Todd Nelson didn't do a half-bad job on the interim.

While all true, the fact remains that it was the rule at the time. I'm glad they scrapped the rule too, but do it in the offseason, not following the SC winning goal.

And to the point about how to fix the lottery so this doesn't happen again, I'd propose something along the lines of a team can only have the top pick twice in any 5 year period.

Under the coming new format where the first three picks are lottery picks, I'd say if a team that's ineligible wins the draft, they get the 4th pick automatically and 4th, 3rd, and 2nd all get bumped up by one spot.
