All things equal, winning the lottery doesn't mean anything. The only teams since 2000 (and I'm sure it's similar if I go back further) to win the lottery and win a Cup afterwards are Chicago and Pittsburgh. Out of 15 first overall picks, 3 have won Cups with teams that drafted them. And to the point about how to fix the lottery so this doesn't happen again, I'd propose something along the lines of a team can only have the top pick twice in any 5 year period.
Under the coming new format where the first three picks are lottery picks, I'd say if a team that's ineligible wins the draft, they get the 4th pick automatically and 4th, 3rd, and 2nd all get bumped up by one spot.
Auston Matthews, it seems.Any consensus who will be the #1 pick next season for Edmonton to take?
I'm fine with the system, I just don't believe in the hockey gods anymore because if they were real nothing good would ever happen to Edmonton ever ever.
Yep, smart move here is to trade one of the best young offensive wingers in the league just as you draft a guy who could be the best centre in the league. That's the ticket to success!
I've never understood this idea that a coach like Babcock would be lured to Edmonton of all places, home of what currently constitutes the most inept management team in North American professional sports, a roster with more holes than a ten square foot sieve, and the worst winter climate in the league, simply to coach McDavid. The idea that he'd jump at the chance also doesn't hold any precedent- when the Pens drafted Crosby they had Eddie Olczyk at the helm and replaced him with Michel Therrien. Star coach if I've ever seen one! Caps pulled Boudreau out of the A to coach Ovie, Lightning gave Stamkos Rick Tocchet and Trapstar Boucher, and the Isles attracted Scott Gordon to coach Tavares. Those are all guys that were pulled out of the AHL, CHL or were assistants. And that all goes without acknowledging that Todd Nelson didn't do a half-bad job on the interim.
How could I forget.Even so
Any consensus who will be the #1 pick next season for Edmonton to take?
How could I forget.
Hahaha! That's even better than Mackenzie burning Milbury earlier this season.I remember a couple of years ago Barry was on Sportscenter to talk about whether or not Stamkos was better than Crosby. At the end of it he said "I'd love to have either guy on my team" and the host said "you did have one of them on your team!". Barry looked like he wanted to strangle the guy, but I was on the floor laughing.
the egg man!
Connor McDavid said all the right things (as he usually does) Saturday night and did it with class, all the while using his off-ice stickhandling skills to avoid any controversy.
But that hasn’t stopped an onslaught of second guessers, especially on social media, from questioning the kid’s perceived lack of enthusiasm at heading to Edmonton, pointing to a still photo of McDavid’s surprised - some would call it shocked - face when the Oilers were announced as the winner of the NHL draft lottery.
As a result, let’s nip one misguided theory in the bud before it develops a life of its own.
McDavid has nothing against Oilers fans. In fact, during a recent interview with the Sun, he praised Edmonton supporters for being so loyal and passionate for their team during recent lean times.
What people need to understand is that Erie general manager Sherry Bassin is like a father figure - perhaps big brother or mentor is a more applicable label - for McDavid. It was Bassin who drafted him to Erie as a 15-year-old. And since that time, it is Bassin who has always had McDavid’s back while the hype around the prized teenager continued to snowball.
Through it all, Connor’s parents, Brian and Kelly, knew that Bassin would always watch out for the best interests of their son.
Imagine, then, what it must have felt like when McDavid heard that Edmonton had won the lottery - the same Edmonton team whose owner, Daryl Katz, is suing Bassin, claiming he failed to carry out a deal to sell the Otters to a subsidiary of the Oilers in 2011. The team would have been moved to Hamilton, Ont.
Bassin responded by filing for bankruptcy protection.
