Harry z is a penguin. That makes me sad.

...me too. I dunno, he's fourth line fodder, right? As long as this doesn't somehow mean the Pens don't re-sign Adams. Everyone's out there talking about Dupuis/Cooke/Letang...but heck, Adams may be more important.

Good. One less team in need of a starter. Fewer teams in need means the price goes down.

I think it also means Luongo to the Isles becomes a strong possibility.

/The team is on the rise and they could use a quality keeper like Bobby Lou.

This also makes the assumption that they'll be willing to foot that contract. Cap wise, okay with all the ELC and what not on the roster I suppose...but what's Luo's actual salary from here on out?

That's really the issue both teams will have. Very limited as to who will be interested. Not a TON of teams will look into picking up a goalie, and of those in the market, how many are able to take on that type of cap hit? And generally, the teams with the cap space are probably more interested in a youth/long term investment.

I could see the Isles being interested in Miller if they buyout Ricky. However, Snow isn't likely to give up much if he feels he's dooing Regier a favor by taking that contract off his hands. The goalie market is clogged with players & there just aren't many teams in need of a starter.

It's a cap hit of 5.3 million for the next 9 years I believe, but the actual salary paid out isn't too bad (drops off significantly in the last four years of the deal). It's right up Wang's alley.

The Isles have already said according to Staple of Newsday that they would buyout Ricky long before they would consider trading him for Luongo.

There are far too many goalies available. Smith, Halak, Khodobin, Greiss, Miller maybe Hiller. Luongo is probably far down any teams list unless the Canucks buy him out.

Yeah, both the Nucks and Sabres better be willing to part with those guys cheaply...there are other, cheaper options that honestly aren't too far off considering the seasons those two have had. I'd take Luo in a heartbeat if his cap hit was like...$3.5M

ya he's a 4th liner.. fringe fourth line really.. he's really fast, goes for big hits (even though he's kinda small), and forechecks freociously.. other than that, he's pretty useless.. mediocre at best hands, not great in his own end

just liked him as an energy guy on the flyers

@MikeColligan 2m Harry Zolnierczyk is an RFA, #Pens must extend a qualifying offer of $660k by next Monday to retain his rights, otherwise he becomes UFA

I'll be rather upset if they do this. $660k on the cap? That'd HAVE to be two way to even consider. We're already stuck with stinking Tanner Glass.

@MikeColligan 1m Other notable RFA's #Pens need to qualify by next week: Kennedy ($2m), Hartzell ($874k), Jeffrey ($688k), Bortuzzo ($578k)

TK ain't getting that. Hartzell I'd like to keep around. And Bort. Jeffrey needs to be given a chance elsewhere.

it probably is 2-way, and if it's not it's below the cap threshold (900k i think) so you can just stash him in the minors.. not sure who the guy the pens sent to anaheim is, but i assume he was equally as mediocre?

An UFA to be making 6.25M next year who ticked off his team beyond words. I would be shocked if some team gave up a 1st round pick for Miller. Especially considering all the goalies availble for trade & the UFA market. It's a buyers market. Lombardi wanted a lot more than what he ended up getting for Bernier. I look at Miller the same way I look at Luongo. Salary Dump.

Let's see, on one hand you have a guy with 1 year left on his contract at $6.25M. On the other you have a guy with 9 years left at $5.3M. One plays for a team that currently has over $14M in cap space with 11 F and 5 D already under contract for next year. The other's team has $47K with 9 F and 6 D under contract (going only by CapGeek's above the line listings for each team).

They may be looking to move Miller to get return and if his attitude in the locker room is causing trouble, but there's no cap need to move him.

EDIT: And for all his shit decisions as GM (and there are plenty), Regier has never been criticized for not getting decent return in a trade.

That is a good guess. Here is a little blurb I found about him in the news regarding the trade:

Grant, 24 (1/20/89), appeared in 46 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2012-13. The 6-3, 200-pound blueliner earned 4-16=20 points with 73 penalty minutes (PIM), while pacing team defensemen in points-per-game (.43). He helped lead Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to the Eastern Conference Final in the 2013 Calder Cup Playoffs, collecting 2-2=4 points with 27 PIM in 13 games.
Selected by Pittsburgh in the fourth round (118th overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Grant has scored 17-45=62 points with a +8 rating and 174 PIM in 125 career AHL games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. He ranked third among AHL rookies and tied for fourth among league defensemen in power-play points (7-20=27) in 2011-12, while setting career highs in goals (10), assists (27), points (37) and appearances (61).

Grant would have run up against some tough competition for a roster spot next season. Shero is making room for Pouliot, Maatta and Harrington, I would assume.

There are only so many teams in need of a #1 goalie. Lombardi didn't get what he wanted for Bernier because it's a buyers market. Regier is in the same boat. If he wants more than the market will bare then Miller will be a member of the Sabres next season. Should be a fun lockeroom.

Another terrible comparison. Counting playoffs, one has played 547 NHL games, the other has played 63. One is still under contract for next year, the other is an RFA. One has been the unquestioned #1 of his team for the last 8 seasons while the other has yet to win the #1 job. One is a proven commodity (though quite possibly past his prime) while the other is still regarded by many as an unproven prospect.

Miller's best years may be behind him (his best in Buffalo at least), but there's still a big difference between those two players.

i would take miller over bernier in a heart beat. 2.81 gaa and a .915 sv% in a 'down year' behind an awful sabres team? i'd take my chances.

then again, in philly his candy ass would get torn to shreds so i wouldn't want the flyers to get him, but that's a specific case.

Here's are some differences you forgot to mention. Even after Bernier gets a nice raise he could still make about half or less than half of what Miller makes this season. The Leafs will have Bernier under control for quite awhile. At almost 25 Bernier is entering the prime of his career. Miller is on the decline. Miller has a limited NTC in which he can say no to any 8 teams in the league.

Entering the final year of his contract at 6.25M I just don't see teams lining up to acquire Miller. Especially with the cap going down. Luongo is the only option for teams who has a contract that's worse.

Call me crazy but I think there are tonnes of teams that would inquire about Miller. Pittsburgh for example would be a great fit. With the Letang situation maybe they just load up for next year and re-assess after the year?

I could see Washington lookign for a guy who's won a Vezina trophy.

Philly is always looking for a good goalie.

The Isles. Might be a great move for them.

What if the Lightning decide that Bishop and Lindback are 1A and 1B and decide to go out and get a plain old number 1?

The Panthers might like how Ottawa has gone with Anderson and Lehner to bring a young tender along slowly. They bring in Miller for at least one year to ease Markstrom into the starting spot.

I really think there could a slew of teams that would kick some tires on Miller. You try him for one year and if it doesn't work out you flip him at the deadline in a worst case scenario.

Just my :2cents:
