Good lord, the Letang smear campaign is full tilt on twitter, hahaha. It's seriously like the Staal situation. Going into a dead duck contract year, news leaks of an offer, hubbub that he's going to say no to the deal (not at allll confirmed, but fans are stupid), fans turn on him because he's "greedy, arrogant", fans want him traded and think Shero "has to trade him", fans okay when actually traded. PR management to a T.

how in the holy hell did he get that trade done. really nice deal Feaster.

I'd be upset about the Flames improving, but I am chuckling too much about the Avs shitting the bed on this one

Hearing that Letang camp informed Penguins earlier tonight that they were turning down an 8-year contract offer worth around $56 million...

Apparently he's seeking around $7.5M a year. The Pens won't do that. The reason they offered THAT deal was because of the length. That's the advantage they have...longer term. Seriously, it's Staal all over again.

EDIT: Man, the rumored return is even similar. First rounder, prospect, roster player. Although the return best be better for Letang.

See, I just wonder if other teams will be willing to make this deal, now. I mean, if I were a GM of another team that really wanted Letang... why not just wait until free agency in 2014 when i wouldn't have to give up anything?

I guess Uncle Ray can try and make some bidding wars for him, but the other team needs assurances that Tanger would sign a new deal after he's traded.. perhaps a sign and trade..

IAC, it's bad news :(

Gee...I feel I have had this conversation before. Letang, even for a full year, is worth quite a bit.

It is a slightly different situation than Staal, though. With Jordan, Ray knew where he wanted to go, and if he didn't trade him last year, Staal would have been almost a lock to sign with the Canes as soon as he became a UFA. Yeah, Shero managed to drive up the return by getting the Rags involved saying he would just ship him to Sather and that forced Rutherford to give more in return.

There isn't one place where Letang wants to go, though. He just wants to get paid, apparently. That does make this a different situation than Staal... and I don't think Ray has near as much leverage as he had with Jordan a year ago. Plus, Staal wasn't all about the money.. as he ended up signing the exact same deal with the Canes that he turned down from the Pens. Tanger just wants the greens

I think he has more leverage. He can send Letang anywhere he wants. Of course, he could've sent Jordan anywhere too, but gave him him a choice. How is there less leverage when you can go to any team that comes calling? And trust me, people are calling HIM. I think we're forgetting just how talented Letang is. I want to keep him, but it's just not feasable.

There is less leverage because there are no guarantees that Letang will sign with the team that Shero would hypothetically trade him to. You knew that Staal would sign a long term deal with the Canes because that is where he wanted to go.

Gonna throw this out there too RE: Letang. I think a big sticking point is the NMC. Letang wants one, but I think Shero is hesitant to give him one. 8 years, that much money, AND a NMC? That's a big risk to take considering Geno/Sid both have NMC. Can't have that much salary on the roster and not have the ability to move it.

Sure, but if Letang's all about the money, and the team acquiring him knows that, it's really simple what they have to do to keep him. Pay up.

Unless he's sent to a place where he doesn't want to be... Which is my whole point about less leverage. If the potential trading partner can't get assurances that Letang will definitely sign on with said club, that means the potential partner will not be willing to give up a lot in return.

I just think if he goes somewhere where they're willing to make him the highest paid Dman in the league, he'll stay. Sure, he probably has some preferences, but he'd also be THE guy on a couple of teams.

Why would a team trade for Letang knowing he doesn't want to be there and that he won't sign.

Don't be naive. Agents are involved with trades all the time. You can be sure that IF Letang get's traded, all the details of his signing with his new team will all be worked out prior to announcing the trade.
