Hearing that Letang camp informed Penguins earlier tonight that they were turning down an 8-year contract offer worth around $56 million...
Apparently he's seeking around $7.5M a year. The Pens won't do that. The reason they offered THAT deal was because of the length. That's the advantage they have...longer term. Seriously, it's Staal all over again.
EDIT: Man, the rumored return is even similar. First rounder, prospect, roster player. Although the return best be better for Letang.
See, I just wonder if other teams will be willing to make this deal, now. I mean, if I were a GM of another team that really wanted Letang... why not just wait until free agency in 2014 when i wouldn't have to give up anything?
I guess Uncle Ray can try and make some bidding wars for him, but the other team needs assurances that Tanger would sign a new deal after he's traded.. perhaps a sign and trade..
Gee...I feel I have had this conversation before. Letang, even for a full year, is worth quite a bit.
It is a slightly different situation than Staal, though. With Jordan, Ray knew where he wanted to go, and if he didn't trade him last year, Staal would have been almost a lock to sign with the Canes as soon as he became a UFA. Yeah, Shero managed to drive up the return by getting the Rags involved saying he would just ship him to Sather and that forced Rutherford to give more in return.
There isn't one place where Letang wants to go, though. He just wants to get paid, apparently. That does make this a different situation than Staal... and I don't think Ray has near as much leverage as he had with Jordan a year ago. Plus, Staal wasn't all about the money.. as he ended up signing the exact same deal with the Canes that he turned down from the Pens. Tanger just wants the greens
There is less leverage because there are no guarantees that Letang will sign with the team that Shero would hypothetically trade him to. You knew that Staal would sign a long term deal with the Canes because that is where he wanted to go.
Sure, but if Letang's all about the money, and the team acquiring him knows that, it's really simple what they have to do to keep him. Pay up.
Unless he's sent to a place where he doesn't want to be... Which is my whole point about less leverage. If the potential trading partner can't get assurances that Letang will definitely sign on with said club, that means the potential partner will not be willing to give up a lot in return.
