On the spur of the moment, I drove to Reno last night to see an old friend, and to see the Rivercats play. My impressions:

1) Pence looks ready now, but I understand the Giants' caution with him. He hit a monster line drive oppo homer. And he cut off two sure doubles down the line and held the batters to singles.

Video Highlights & Clips - MiLB | Pence crushes a homer for the River Cats - Video | MiLB.com Multimedia | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball

2) Adrianza looked very good with the bat, going 2-6. Alas, he got picked off of first in the 3rd inning.

3) Panik was 0-3 with a walk, and is still getting in game shape.

4) Tomlinson was locked in last night going 4-5 with some solid defense and base running. He did make a throwing error, though.

5) Gorkys Hernandez looks very good at the plate and in the field, now hitting .301

6) Mejia looked very solid, hitting low-90's on the gun, with a very nice curveball. He struck out 7 in 5 innings, many of them called.

7) Jake Dunning was hitting 95 on the gun consistently, giving me the impression the gun was hot.

8) Matt Reynolds was solid, again. perhaps he is the Loogy or the LHP reliever the Giants are looking for. More of a dumpster dive, but if he can get the job done, why not?

9) We left after the bottom of the 7th, and I drove home, getting home around 1:30 a.m. (Paying for it today).

10) The play of the game was the Aces' Ildemaro Vargas racing into shallow CF in the 6th when the Cats had the bases loaded and two outs, and I think it was SUsac who blooped one out there, and Vargas laid out with his back to the infield to make the grab. I thought for sure it was going to drop. A spectacular play. Vargas can also hit a little bit. Dude's a player.

Tommy Aaron was a scrub at best.
Aaron and Brett were both decent, but neither were stars.
Wasn't familiar with Jim Perry, but yes, he looked like a solid player.
Daffy Dean had 2 years, and I am not even sure how good those years were, seeing as they were in the dead-ball era.
Billy was OK, but nothing special.
Mike Maddux lasted forever. Not much more can be said for him.
If Al Leiter were the "the brother", than he would be OK. But as "the star", just a couple of scrub brothers.
Similar case for the Drews. JD was solid, but no star. Stephen was better than a scrub.
Mike Glavine? Really? Why didn't you mention Ozzie Canseco?
All Hairstons were just journeymen, at best. Just because they all killed the Giants doesn't make any of them stars.
Glenn Hoffman was serviceable at best.

I was not saying he couldn't get a cuppo, or that brothers never make the bigs. I was saying that brothers rarely make a difference. I would have used most of your samples to help prove my point...

Heck, second/third gen players rarely do much (Bonds, Sheffield, Boones, Bell, Griffey, a few others are exceptions)

I grew up watching Jim Perry pitch for the Twins. Dude won 215 games! He was more than a solid player.

In 1970, he was 24-12, threw 278 innings over 40 starts, and had 13 complete games, and 4 shutouts.

It's funny -- I go to Reno about every five years, as I played at Nevada. Every time I go now, I find it just freaking depressing. I haven't been a SilverSox/Aces game since they were played at Moana Stadium. I guess the new ballpark is downtown?

Yes, it is down by the railroad tracks, just south of 80. Right by the Truckee River, though it isn't really a river as it goes through Reno. It is a nice yard, for AAA.

Yeah, many of the folks I see in Reno have lived hard lives. Met a buddy who lives in Sparks, which is now about 85,000 people!?!

that appears to be looking northeast, with MGM/Ballys in the background? Or is my perspective screwed up?

Wednesday 7/27

Pitching Line: IP-H-R-ER-BB-K

Sacramento (47-58) lost 7-3

Hunter Pence 1-4 (.450), HR (3), 2 RBI, 1 R, GIDP
Joe Panik 2-4 (.231)
Kelby Tomlinson 2-4 (.300)
Gorkys Hernandez 1-4 (.301), 2B, 1 R

Clayton Blackburn
5.0-4-1-1-1-3 (4.86 ERA)

Richmond (42-60) WON 6-5

Steven Duggar 1-4 (.309), 3 RBI
C.J Hinojosa 2-5 (.289), 1 R
Brandon Bednar 2-4 (.304), 1 R, 2 RBI
Chris Shaw 1-3 (.183), 2 BB, 1 R, E. Good to see him take a couple walks as he tries to work through his funk.

Kyle Crick (W, 3-8) 6.1-3-4-1-3-8 (5.27 ERA). The numbers still aren't that pretty, but he's strung together some nice starts here. In the first 4 innings, Crick struckout 7, allowed 3 baserunners and needed only 37 pitches (27 for strikes). Hope.

San Jose (54-49) lost 2-1

Dylan Davis 4-4 (.303), 2B, 1 RBI

Phil Bickford
7.0-3-2-2-4-4 (2.73 ERA). 100 pitches from Bickford, on a HOT day game. Probably the most they've extended Phil in his career.

The Giants went up against a guy who has a 0.84 ERA in the Cal League, which I didn't think was possible (granted, it's his second tour).

Salem-Keizer (18-22) lost 4-1

Heath Quinn 2-4 (.324), 1 R

Connor Menez (L, 0-1) 5.0-5-4-4-1-4 (7.20 ERA). Didn't start off good, but finished great retiring the last 10 batters he faced

I was excited (and tweeted) about finally getting to catch a Mejia start after schedules/road games ruined every other opportunity, also planned to interview him for profile soon.

It's clear it was never meant to be

Steven Duggar 1-5 (.315), 2B
