Dipoto Gets Extension

Dipoto's whole reason for being hired was to make things happen FAST!! He can play his trading crap to get a winning team a lot faster than if he were to spend time/energy growing a farm system. I do not agree with this approach because the odds of putting together a sustainable winning team are slim to none. Look at all the positive strokes he's getting from the fan base and the owners. It takes real work and time to build a farm system. Sure, the M's are doing much better but are barely hanging in there-we've got a mediocre pitching staff and a very inconsistent offense at best. Certainly not a team you're gonna bet your money on. (I was gonna say "bet the farm on", but figured I get a ration of shit for that)

And the thing is that the top teams sign free agents not only to save from trading youth but free agents can 1) Make a veteran with trade value available to fill needed spots 2) Free agents can be traded at some point for value as well.

I truly don't understand their philosophy other than squeak, squeak.

One good thing about the Yankees, Red Sox or Dodgers (being a big market team) which Stanton and Co. have as much money as any other ownership group. Is they can trade their big contracts like Felix, Cano or Seager because they will eat the cost of their salary to get prospects back to replenish the farm system.

Not sure but Ill defer to blstoker on that. Regardless the timing for the extension was ridiculous. The same thing happened with Jack Z the year before they canned him. They wait until the team is playing well to slip it in so they can justify it but not actually caring about the end results. They would rather reward mediocrity then admit a mistake on their end.

I completely agree, but this is why they gave Jack Z an extension because of the trade deadline and why Wedge told them to pound sand the off-season prior. Being a lame duck GM or manager/coach is all fine and good if the team/organization/program is in good shape but the Mariners were not in terms of the organization. With Stanton, Osuna, Yelich and Gordon being dealt from the Marlins I am pretty sure the highest rated prospect they got back was from the Mariners. Either I think he knew he was going to get one unless they totally tanked unless the ownership group really doesn’t know a lick about baseball. There was zero chance they were going to tank it this year when so many teams waved the white flag by the winter meetings.

This is sad but completely true. I believe the main part of this was getting the cash for Ohtani which was irrelevant in the end anyway. Either way everything about the Gordon deal sucked. What we gave up, the player we got back, what we have to pay the player the next few years unless we can deal him, putting him in a position he never played before, forcing him to leadoff. And the fact that you got fleeced by the Marlins!!! Who gets fleeced by the Marlins

But wait....Dipoto got the contract extension for his oh so fine GM performance. LA Angels had a good laugh when they saw the M's organization hire Dipoto, along with his "true to the blue" sidekick Servais. What a combo we were able to land. ughhhh

i think you guys are giving Dipoto to much heat and I really do not know what you guys expect. Since 2010 we have had 1 winning season in 6 seasons before Jerry took over. When Jerry took over the last 4 years 2 of those seasons we have had winning seasons.

Idk if you guys expect us to be playoff contenders and have the best farms all around and find all stars in the 10th round of the draft but right now we have some young players in our lineup playing pretty well and our AA team is the best team in the entire Texas league we actually have prospects that we can look forward to being called up. When Jerry took over he had an old ass roster with bust prospects in Cano, Bloomquist, Ackley, Cruz, Fernando Rodney, Joe Biemel, Ricki Weeks, Jesus Montero etc

This season and next is all about evaluating players rather than wins and losses. it is IMPOSSIBLE there is no human on this earth that can change this roster around in a few short years and make them better than the Houston Astros whom are loaded with players that they drafted from when they were a terrible team. So unless bill gates and warren buffet buy the team and give a payroll of 3 billion dollars and try to buyout every free agent we need to give Jerry some more time and credit.

But what you just gave credit for is the job of the farm director not the general manager of a MLB franchise. The GM’s foremost job is to win at the big league level. 4 years into a contract and all he has to show for it is an epic collapse and a good AA team? Had he done a complete tear down when he first got hired sure when Felix, Seager and Cruz has value but doing it now all but gives him a legitimate excuse for 1 more extension to see this through.

Yeah I agree with @seattlefan75 this thing is going to need time.
I still feel it sucks they started this rebuild this year when they could've started two years ago and we could be a little closer to seeing good baseball again...

The other thing I see if Dipoto is shown the door who else would be stupid enough to take the job?
There really isn't a super high demand for anyone wanting a job with penny pinching owners ( could you imagine the sell job Jerry had to do to ownership to eat all this payroll?)

I think if any real serious approach is needed now its time to clear the dug out of the coaching staff.
You need a staff that can handle the younger guys, coach them up. Servais needs to go back to being a bench coach with a manger that knows what he's doing .

Couldn't agree more, but unfortunately I don't see it happening. Dip and Serv are like 2 peas in a pod (or captains going down with their sinking ship). The only way Servais goes is if ownership tells Jerry if HE wants to keep HIS job he better get a REAL manager...period.

Oh 100% agreed!

Which I see happening this time next year. I think Scotty boy miss manage of pitchers will be seen by ownership with the young guns they'll have up next year and Jerry's hand is forced to show him the door.

Scott's lack of experience as a manager has been a big part of our downfall the previous couple of seasons. I hold Jerry absolutely responsible for that. Scott had absolutely NO management experience and Dipoto hires him as the Manager? IMO Servais still lacks what it takes to manage an MLB team, particularly dealing with the pitching staff.

It's possible we could've made the post-season with a better manager, but I don't think it would've meant much because the team vastly outperformed their talent level.

With Diaz sporting a 5.50 ERA with the Mets (that's not a typo), Robinson Cano hitting .239/.287/.361 (yes that's AVG/OBP/SLG) along with Kelenic and Dunn tearing it up at the minors, this could go down as one of the better trades in Mariners history.
