I think DD's worst trades were in the last year. Trading jake thompson for soria is going to hurt... trading robbie ray and that 19 yr old SS for greene is even worse... greene was a complete unknown before last year and robbie ray was a highly regarded prospect.. as was leyba the 19 yr old.... he traded away a left handed pitcher with promise for a 26 yr old righty that has a ceiling of a 5th starter.

those 2 trades to me are the worst ones he made in his 13 years

I'm sensing sarcasm here for some odd reason. A set-up man yes but not sure about a second consecutive year or more as a closer. He did extremely well after taking over for Valverde in 2013 to close out the season
benoit was very solid other than that meatball he served up for ortiz.

I was serious.

I like Benoit a lot. Not necessarily as a closer, but we obviously could do worse. He was great as a setup guy.

But even with the age factor, I preferred Ol' Joe as closer, initially. Came to thoroughly dislike him quickly though.

Benoit should have been signed for years

The bad thing is, those aren't even my least favorite trades last offseason.

DD really had a rough winter when it came to trades.

(Dealing for Simon to start still makes me angry. Suarez must've done something behind the scenes. Ausmus just quit playing him and then he got thrown away for nothing.)

Well, I know one thing for a fact, Soria had 5 runs of 17 straight appearances without allowing a RUN (not ER) and one of those streaks was 23 straight appearances without a RUN. Better than Kimbrel to date. Kimbrel's best, I believe was 19 straight appearances without allowing a RUN and 3 runs of 17 straight appearances without allowing a RUN. or real close to those #'s for Kimbrel and Soria

I forget what the Padres gave him, but it was a lot more than a setup guy should get. And I don't think the Front Office wanted him to be our closer.

Every year when we lose in the post season somebody has to take the brunt, JB took it along with Prince, I think.

Well, and Leyland.

This will NEVER be the norm... High end starters will always rule. Teams with good rotations AND good bullpens will beat a team with a shitty rotation and a good bullpen in a 7 game series every time..."

no shit, the premise is that there are more high end bullpen pitchers than high end starters than ever before. That's why I continued to get pissed at DD for pussyfooting around with the bullpen, he had the high end starters and close to a high end offense. Adding 2 or 3 bullpen pitchers over the trash he did go with would have won them more than one title. Well, well he added Nathan, well well he added Soria..the idiot had Joba, Coke, AA, Gorz, insert name here. to pitch before they even could get in the game.

Ever damn team wants High end starters, high end bullpen and high end offense. Its the name of the game, hardly any teams get all 3 if any.

the teams all in the playoff hunt - have the top bullpens, not starters- can look at top 10 teams in SP and RP and more teams in the hunt have better BP.

Yanks, Blue Jays, Royals are proving this to name a few, 2 are definitely not small market.

not at 8M a year, he shouldn't have

but spending 10 mil on a 39 yr old was smart? or 7 mil on a two time TJ patient? Which one would you spend your money on?

point being, Tigers were going to spend it on someone, they had a guy that was pretty dominate and right in the sweet years for closers/relievers.

Nathan had 5+ straight years of top level closer. Benoit didn't have Nathan's resume'.

Easier looking at 20/20 hindsight. I too liked Benoit a lot but as a set-up man mainly and maybe a spot closer role here and there.

Benoit was 36 years old his last year in Det... those are the sweet years for a closer/ reliever? That is a first that I heard that...

Point is.. paying any 35+ yr old to pitch for you is a gamble... 10 mil for 39 yr old nathan or 8 mil for 37 yr old benoit... lol at 37 yrs old being the sweet spot for closers.. lol

Dodgers no hit twice in a 10 day span... has that ever happen to a team.. let alone one in first place in their division?

Yeah it's very odd how he was the lone great BP acquisition and we probably questioned that signing the most prior..

point being, Benoit had gotten better from 31-35, the guy was peaking and proved so in SD.

Det had the player in hand, but left it to find greener pastures and failed.
