Well we only truly know if someone has CTE if they die and we are able to perform an autopsy.

However we do have one data point regarding stage 3 CTE in a young athlete. So we can look for behavior in young athletes similar to the behavior of the one subject who was diagnosed with stage 3 CTE in order to possibly make a diagnosis. This means we need to set up an experiment in which young athletes are observed over short periods of time. And if those young athletes happen to hang themselves in jail after murdering a semi-professional football player who caught them slamming another dude's shitter we'll know that they probably have CTE.
