The question was asked if any team had ever had back to back #1 scoring D and overall Ds, so I looked it up. Since 1970, it has only happened once where a team had back to back season with the #1 scoring D and #1 yardage D, the 1985 & 1986 Chicago Bears.

This is the first time since 1970 that any team has had the #1 scoring D in 3 consecutive seasons (and quite possibly the first time since Cleveland had the #1 for 5 years in a row in the 50s). So, should this make Seattle a contender for greatest D in history, maybe. But, either way, they have been really good for several years.

And Jaws and the other tool on the network are already saying seattle didn't play any good quarterbacks during the last 6 games. They should diss and dismiss the Seahawks some more as it really feeds these guys.

With all the new rules that exist now for the QB,WR's i would say yes the Seahawks are the best ever, think about the hits on WR's,QB's all those other teams got away with compared to today, hell even the 80's it was brutal being a WR.

Teams play bad and back up QBs all the time and don't put up the numbers this D does so that argument is completely asinine. I'm sure the 85 Bears faced nothing but HOF QBs week after week after week, right Jaws?

The thing is the NFL,Media ect like to keep these old players, teams in a almost sacred nostalgia, the game was so different in the 50'to 60's to 70's and even the not too long ago the 80's,,anyone think the "Fridge" would be playing right now in this NFL? i doubt it.

I bet however that Mean Joe Greene would be tearing it up though

By the way sacks were not even counted officially until 1982,because there was FAR MORE for one.

Seahawks’ confident defense says it’s even better than last year

"Michael Bennett calmly established the framework for dissecting a unit that always seems to find a new peak.

“We’re the best defense of all time, so the confidence level is always up high,’’ he said.

Somehow, it didn’t sound boastful, or even hyperbolic. Not after a game in which Seattle’s defense took the game by the throat and shook out a 20-6 victory over St. Louis."

"Five times in the past six games, Seattle has held its opponent to a touchdown or less. The Seahawks led the NFL in scoring defense for the third consecutive year, a feat not accomplished since the Vikings’ fabled Purple People Eaters from 1969 to 1971.

Heading into the playoffs, the Seahawks are riding a wave of defensive electricity that crackles with just as much intensity as it did a year ago.

“No matter what we do, we’re going out there with a swagger that we can’t be touched or we can’t be moved,’’ Bennett said. “We feel like Muhammad Ali, Jack Johnson, whoever it is. We go out there and we know we can’t be beat.”

This Defense playing in the 80's with the size and Speed at CB/S would destroy teams back then. No one would be able to catch a pass over the middle at all lol. Our CB could grab hold and damn near TACKLE WR's. This is why i said in another thread that the rules back in the 80's helped that bears team be greater than it was. They were a Great historic Defense but they wouldn't have that same success now as they did then BUT the Seahawks ARE HAVING THAT SAME SUCCESS.

Greatest ever defense? nah you can not say that but you can say this team is right there with the all time best defenses ever in the NFL. 20-30 years from now they will be talking about the LoB as one of if not the greatest.

I hate looking at defenses (or anything else) and comparing them straight across against each other. Apples and oranges. As mentioned, rules were different then, and players were of different size. But, I like comparing what Seattle has done compared to other defenses of their time, and the Bears against other defenses of their time.

Even so, Seattle has been as dominate over the last 2 seasons (3 in allowing points) as anyone in history when looking at how the league performed at that time.

But jaws said krsperdick was the greatest qb of all time.

Its funny too that the people saying we played bad qbs did not pick us to go 6-0 against those best qbs.

Well, I guess I'll transfer my earlier thoughts here.

Number 1 Scoring Defense

#1 in points allowed DESPITE playing the # 1,2,3,5 scoring Offenses. Plus only 1 (Oakland) of the bottom 6 scoring Offenses.

That's pretty awesome.

Yes #1 Scoring defense in an era where offense is king and scoring is out of control.

I saw tonight that the Browns have averaged 11 pts per game on O while going 0-5 to end the season. Over the final 6 games, this D is allowed barely over half of what the worst offense in the league is scoring. This is an all time D.

Just more disrespect from the east media. More raw meat for the players. Please disrespect the Seahawks some more. Exhibit A = 8 points in garbage time by the greatest offense in the biggest game.
It must've been a fluke. I mean, seattlites spend the summer months hunting seals on the polar ice pack.

The offenses we played in the last 6 games averaged 21.15 pts/game on the season. We held them to more than 14 points less than their average game total.

That is just huge. Take 2 TDs away from any team's normal scoring output and it is game over.

Too think that half the defense was out multiple games with some kind of injury and are pretty much on par or better then last season.

That defense was fortunate to play against guys like, Ron Jaworski during that era... Curious myself, I posted the Qb's the Bears did play against in '85...

Steve Deberg, TB (2xs)
Tony Eason, NE (2xs)
Tommy Kramer, MIN (2)
Jay Schroeder, WASH
Joe Montana, SF
Randy Wright, GB (1st game - 3rd string QB for GB)
Jim Zorn, GB (2nd game - 2nd string QB for GB)
Dan Marino, MIA (Torched them giving Chicago their only Loss of the season)
Eric Hipple, DET (2xs)
Danny White, DAL
David Archer, ATL
Mike Pagel, IND
Ken O'Brien, NYJ
Dieter Brock, RAMS

WOW, that is one awful list of QB's they played... They played against only 4 Probowl QB's all season... Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Phil Simms and Ken O'Brien, playing each only one time, which they went 3-1 against...

And yet, the Hawks play, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Rodgers, Rivers, Romo, C.Newton, which they went 4-2 against... I think the Hawks Qb's they've played stacks up very well to who the Bears played...

Jaworski has always hated on the Hawks ever since they made the postseason at 7-9... He thought Kaep was awesome and was one of the best QB's a year or two ago and now he's saying the Hawks haven't played any good Qb's the last 6 games, even though we've played against Kaep 2xs...

Dude is just a blow hard...
