I updated the roster for the 20/21 off season. If I am correct, we are currently at 37 on the 40. That allows for 3 pickups/additions before we have to start making “hard” decisions.
You are correct. Camilo Doval, Gregory Santos and Alexander Canario, if I'm correct, will all need to be added to the 40 man roster to be protected from the Rule 5 draft so there will probably (what am I saying, we are talking about FZ here, there will be) more guys dfa'd later this offseason.

I still have no idea how FZ works, so I truly don’t have a good feel, but that is actually a decent list.

Dick has no glove, but his bat can carry a team for a short while.
Solano has no glove, but his bat can carry a team for a short while.
Ruf has no glove, but his bat can carry a team for a short while.
The team (even the previous administration) has no faith in Slater, but every time he gets playing time, he puts up solid numbers, and his defense is above average.
Anderson is a solid #4 starter.
Moronta is a potential closer.
Peralta is a nice 7th inning guy.
Jarlin has a BIG arm.
Robertson has not been around long enough to establish himself, but the little I have seen I like. He plays every position and his bat seems to have potential.
Gott has had a couple bad seasons in a row and COULD be non-tendarded, but the staff seems to like him.

Just going in a different direction?
I'm sure that is part of it but its probably also because a lot of orgs are cutting out excess specialists. The Cardinals recently let go of 4 former players who were in similar roles. It is fallout from this year but its also a chance for FZ to make the org more of his own.

Still doesn’t have a cuppo, but gets a major league deal?

Odd.
I don't think the Giants have done this before but there have been other orgs that have done this on occasion. Maybe FZ hopes he found the next Justin Turner/Chris Taylor. The article does mention that he is one of the few minor league free agents with pop. It may have been that the Giants had to offer a guaranteed big league contract to land him.

Apparently both sides are still interested in a longer term deal.
Personally, a multi year deal with him seems unwise. He had an absolutely awful 2019. Maybe he does become the next Jason Schmidt and proves that to be a shrewd move. I'd rather see what he could do over a full season before locking him in. I think it would blow up in the FO's faces.

Surprised to see Garcia on that list. Though I did expect the team to look outside the org for the bu catcher position.

Who tf is Kervin Castro? This kid was never on my radar at all...

Interesting moves. Not surprised at all at the additions of Doval and Santos. Seems like no-brainers. Castro is surprising. I mentioned that he had a nice season in 2019 at Salem-Keizer (2021 roster) but the Giants haven't protected guys who had nice seasons in SK in years past. I guess they are concerned he has a high chance of being taken in the Rule 5.
I'm still trying to figure out why Canario was protected this year. He signed July 2, 2016 but wasn't assigned to a roster until June 2, 2017. From what I remember, that delays his 5 year service clock (since he was under the age of 18 at the time of the roster assignment). That would have put his first year of eligible for the Rule 5 after the 2021 season. I wonder if this is an FO oops.
I hope both Shaw and Garcia get a decent shot somewhere else. With Shaw, they should have done this when it was obvious they didn't want him any longer. Kind of a jerk move to do that now versus spring training (or, at least, when they decided not to carry him in the 60 player pool).
Garcia was never a favorite of the current regime. Every spring training, at least going into 2018 and 2019, he was the guy who should have gotten the back up job, but the org went different directions. He hit well in limited action in 2018 but poorly in 2019. Then, he went from a guy who may have been ready by the tail end of 2020 to not hearing a thing about him. Seems to be the Giants' way with catching prospects who've come up after Posey.
I don't understand why Humphreys was ever added to the 40 man roster to begin with. He didn't need to be added when they acquired him from the Mets. They stuck him at the ATS for about 2 weeks and then moved him to the restricted list. Now, he's off and they unnecessarily exposed him to other teams. Why?

Remember back when we would DFA out excess and feel safe that they would go unclaimed? Now ALL our castoffs get gobbled up.
